As an outsider wrt grant funded research at the university level I wonder (1) how much of these cuts in federal grants are warranted to eliminate expenditures not really pertinent to the performance of the actual research and (2) to what extent will the research process be improved by forcing non-profit entities to analyze and interrogate how the grant $$s are being spent?

I suspect the federal government has been overly aggressive in its “cuts” and I bet the adverse consequences of the cuts as being reported by the impacted entities are overstated. I would not take a statement by a university impacted by funding cuts to be completely honest and objective. They are now political beasts and want those taxpayer $$s back in their coffers.

I am a bit surprised @mdgator05 hasn’t corrected you yet.

Thats strange as most have some kind of insurance and these centers charge insurance and bill co payments and deductibles. At least I know Shands does as I have paid them a lot of money out of pocket. While I can see research being cut they should still be able to see and treat patients without using research money to do it.

    very little if any

While almost anything can be improved, I do not recall thinking that the research process was in need of improvement anytime we wrote grant applications or provided progress updates to our funding body be it the military directly, DARPA or NASA.

That said, I am a few decades on now from doing those things, but I am guessing it is not that much different now.

You’re guessing things haven’t changed in the past couple of decades? Ok.
