Question, does a program with a strong religious undertone hurt or help recruiting? It would seem to appeal to a select few but severely limit the depth of the viable options. Can we discuss this here or should it be in THFSG?
I would generally think it would help. There are lots of religious athletes and my personal experience is that the non-religious kids don’t really care that much being around the religious people.
Very big deal for some families. Some impact nearly all of the time. We have a pretty religious staff right now, fwiw
It is a factor though. It appeals to some but is a negative for others and may also limit the potential pool of applicants when it comes to coaches. If we are running a program with a strong religious bent it should be okay to discuss the pros and cons of that reality
And a lot of players aren't choir boys. If we are limiting our recruiting and coaching choices to those who value religion it would automatically reduce the numbers. That would seem to cause a self imposed hardship. Do you disagree? Don't want a team full of thugs but don’t want to lose recruits or not hire best coaches in order to forment a religoius culture that limits our potential.
yeah truly religious coaches don’t lie to players. That’s why you have guys saying the staff is “brutally honest” with them
Must be hard to be brutally honest and be a good salesman, especially with these kids that have others telling them what they want to hear.
@WEDGator, what do you dislike about the post? Care to comment to support the rating? The eite talent pool of coaches and players is small. Do you disagree that cutting the numbers by half or more in support of personal beliefs makes the job harder or easier?
Is Florida thought to be conspicuously such a program? IS there such a program in FBS anymore? Even Notre Dame is heavily secularized at this point
Can’t say I agree with this. People are fallible, very much including religious people. There may be some slight differences on the margin, but I’ve never seen any significant differences in rates of things like lying. Plenty of upstanding and honest religious people, and plenty of upstanding and honest who aren’t. Same is true in the reverse. You can always fall back on the argument of whether they are “truly” religious. However, I personally don’t doubt that sinners can have true faith and belief, and you find plenty of them in every walk of life too (religious included).
Oklahoma just won their third straight softball title with a ‘religious culture’. Their player interviews were amazing.
Dabo is pretty deep into projecting his religion everywhere. Never seemed to hurt him. Certainly probably plays better in the southeast and across the bible belt than say, Illinois or New York or Massachusetts.
Don’t believe everything that you read here. Especially from a couple negative posters. SS nor CBN are bible thumper types. Strong personal beliefs and principles are a great thing in leading people IMO.
You can say that again. I remember watching our 52 - 20 beat down of FSU in the national championship game. You could clearly read his lips shout “B*** S***” after an interception.
