I think it was the Mizell td that he started to run ala Tebow , broke down the defense, then stopped and threw a dime. That was beautiful

We play Texas A@M next week, not a high school team. That will be DJs first barometer.

27 yards off the alltime record? We’ve played crappy teams before. There’s hope for next Saturday that I didn’t have before.

Mertz also wasn’t making the quick decision against Miami. The deciding factor is Lagway hit the deep shots that Mertz missed. And you can’t argue that pressure caused Mertz to miss those deep shots because he was well protected on those two missed posts. And Lagway’s pass to Mizzel? was created by Lagway stepping up into the pocket and making the throw on the run. Mertz had a few opportunities to do that and didn’t against Miami. This is the EJ versus AR, Franks versus Trask argument all over again.

Lagway gives a dimension that Mertz doesn’t, and that dimension is needed for this offense to work well.

Throughout history, we’ve had the luxury of playing second and third stringers by the beginning of the second half in these types of games. We’ve had a dozen qb’s capable of breaking that record if they were left in the majority of the game and we continued to run the offense.

I agree. Hence rave reviews about a lot of lineman during camp. Because in the right situation..we have some bruisers. But 3rd and long is a problem for most lines. Now add in that the defense can predict with high probability what we will run..and you get our results.

Well..he did learn last night. He absolutely got rocked on that helmet helmet (by the way..would have absolutely been called targeting in most games). But Lagway actually slide too soon after that haha. Which I’m fine with.

The QB making quick decisions and stepping up in the pocket will help make the OL look better than it is. Mertz is not the best QB for this OL. I go back to that TD pass to Mizzel. I don’t see Mertz making that throw. Mertz needs to move in the pocket more and make the deep throws to take pressure off his OL. If teams can stack the box against our offense and not pay for it, the pressure on our OL increases significantly.

Rewatching the game right now, that first deep pass by Lagway was playfake, roll to the left 4 steps, and then let the ball go. There was no hesitation on that throw.

In theory, creating a pocket and having a pocket qb should be easier for the line. Mobile qb’s have a tendency to run outside their line at the first sign of pressure which makes it all but impossible to retain a block without holding.

We get it, you like Lagway over Mertz. So does pretty much everybody else. Doesn't mean the OL is going to be good enough for us to have success against real competition.

I mostly agree with all you posted, and Mertz had a terrible night, below anything we had seen from him for quite a few games. However, some of those missed throws were not going to be completed regardless, e..g. Badger hadn't beaten his man on the post, and Jackson was covered as well and Mertz would have had to guess where to hit him as he was tangled up. In comparison, Mizell ran one of the most poorly run double moves and still got behind the db. Tank had no problem running behind 2 db. Neither are likely to happen or have enough time to develop for us in SEC play. We have to just project what may happen for Lagway, and a lot of that is built on hope.
