This does not count those online.
My response was less than 5.
I'm at a loss. Can't really think of one. Some of that is due to circumstance - career and current location. I'm in hockey land where hoops are an afterthought. There is, of course, a question of what constitutes a "fan." I'm using someone who follows a team closely and watches games regularly for my operational definition.
Personally, I watch every Gator game, LOVE the tourney, and enjoy following the SEC. I'll watch good SEC games with interest. I don't know anyone else who is quite as avid, but have a friend or two who follow the Gators.
That's basically what I meant. Someone who follows it on a regular or semi-regular basis at least.
That’s really tough because I know quite a few who are aware of their team and maybe a couple other teams in general, but virtually none who know it intimately like myself.
LOL. I live in North Carolina, so definitely over 50
More fans under Billy D years than now at UF, if that is your point.
It's an interesting question. Most people I know are pretty in tune with their CFB teams but basketball is an after thought.
No, I was not thinking along those lines at all. Just something that came to mind.
Same with me.
Wife and old work buddy are the two biggedt fans I know.
I live in Louisville, the #1 CBB market in the country, so way over 50!
I was thinking about that recently too. In college I was much more about basketball and volleyball, but in the decades since, the people in my life are all about football, so I don't keep up with the other sports nearly as much.
I know probably 20. Live in Tampa. But I have a couple of friends who went to ky, a couple that went to Kansas, one NC guy. I've met quite a few through them. I don't know one serious Gators fan aside from me and my wife (watches all the games and knows the players). But that's probably on me since I'm not active in the Gator community here.
I also know a bunch of folks through a yearly suicide pool for the tournament. Which incidentally is the most fun sports betting I've ever done. Pick one team each day of the tournament and can never pick them again. Lose and you are out. No rebuy. This year will be a hoot!
I live in Brooklyn, so a ton of people that like basketball. Tons of people who liked, or were distant fans of the Gators due to Erving Walker growing up the neighborhood I used to play pick up in. It was always cool to hear people shout him out and talk about stories of him playing pick up when I'd wear Gator merch.
Personally I have quite a few friends and family that follow hoops -- but are frustrated with the current state of the program.
I grew up in Southern Indiana, right across the river from Louisville; so lots.
I am only a college BB fan for the most part. Pretty much the same with baseball. I might watch some MLB playoff games but not regular season. I have followed college baseball and basketball for all my 60 plus years. I am sure it because of the Gators. I really don't know many friends that pay attention to Florida basketball. My 91 year old mother still does as a few family members but can't think of any friends that pay it much attention in the regular season.
I meant to put college bb in the title of the thread and missed it. I did add it in the first post but I'm going back to edit the title for clarity. Thanks for the post as it brought it to my attention.
I was born and raised in Louisville, so way over 50!
Maybe we'll get some more replies but in the meantime, I wanted to add my reason for posting this. Also, thanks to all who took the time to vote.
It's no great secret that our bb forums don't compare at all with the ones for football and that's no surprise. I truly believe they are a reflection of interest overall in bb in the south with the exception of UK.
Also, and this is not directed at anyone but we have a lot of fair-weather fans who seem to only be interested in the Gator bb team when they are winning. We also have those that stick with them through thick and thin. Personally, I'm going to watch them as long as I can still do so. Like anyone, winning is what I want but the guys who are playing are still Gators in my book and I'll support them as much as possible. Hopefully, by next year I can return to attending some games.
