He's got to, because his run stats to AR's will pale!
He’s not a running QB - of course his running stats to AR’s ‘will pale’. But AR didn’t do nearly enough of that running for it to have made much of a difference. Imagine what our record would have been last season if he’d actually made running part of his offense. But he didn’t and AR’s marvelous running ability was essentially a non-factor in our season. Really unfortunate.
So if Mertz/Miller throw better than AR - which won’t take much - we should see overall improvement at QB in 2023
You make it sound like AR ran the ball enough to be a big factor in our offense that we’re losing. He didn’t. He only ran enough to get us all excited about his running ability. Nothing more.
In fact, the more I think about it the more it pisses me off. So I’ll stop
I agree with your point about his ACTUAL running. But I think his ABILITY to run did change defenses in ways that helped our running game and that we will probably not see next year (with a pocket QB). I think every team from Kentucky forward put a spy on him. I don't think we'll see that next year.
I do wonder how our offense would have looked last year if AR was given the green light to tuck it and run after his first 3 reads.
BN clearly and unambiguously stated on camera that AR had the greenlight to run on "every play" when the opportunity presented itself. AR clearly chose not to do more than he actually did in the run game on his own volition. I've already offered my opinion on why that was and there's no point in beating a dead horse at this point. But I will say that I have never seen you pass up an opportunity to take a back-handed swipe at BN, justified or not. Last week it was what a bum Mertz is and how badly BN fumbled the ball by not landing a bigger name in the portal. After being called out on that by one the mods, as well as others, you've now switched to we sure better be able pass without AR's fabulous running ability, and what a shame it was that BN was too stupid to "let" AR run the ball last season. I can't wait to see what's next in the "Billy is a bum" hit parade.
So could I, we’ll maybe not
AR get past three reads?
Well that’s the dumbest shit all day
And if not, we’ll make him our escape goat.
He won’t get past me.
Or anyone el…. Never mind .
(in the event of full disclosure, the comments in this post were merely to elicit a smile from the anonymous reader, and were no way meant as a disparaging remark towards the scholar athlete for which this post is named after.)
How do you know AR wasn’t given the green light to run the ball?
CBN suggested in a postgame interview that the QB basically has that option on all plays. It’s the one time he half-way threw AR under the bus.
I should've clarified..."wasn't given the green light" by either COACH (lizard argued effectively above that was not the case) or by himself (more likely scenario). He was obviously holding back. But his ABILITY to run did change the defensive scheme of teams we played. That was my point.
What is up with the attacks, man? I'm getting double teamed by a lizard and a skink!
I don't know where you drew that conclusion from. I was in no way insulting our coach. Even if BN had given AR that instruction (your argument is valid), I wouldn't have faulted him given the lack of depth and drop-off of talent behind him at QB. Perhaps (probably?) it was AR himself who made that decision. Either way, his lack of running hurt us. But it DID change defenses schematically because he COULD run. That was my (only) point.
But sheesh...before you make very broad generalizations and label me a Napier basher (I'm not), why don't you look at the totality of my posts (or a better sampling, at least) and not just the ones you disagree with? I could read 8-10 posts from you or Skink and conclude things about you that aren't true. I've been a pretty active poster on the paid boards for the last couple of years and thought I'd come back here for a bit. I've never been called out over there for sharing less-than-rosy opinions. Lots of healthy debate - which is the literal point of message boards.
AR's ability to run did help the run game. We saw how effectively Oregon State made us look without AR. What we don't know yet, will the new OL be better in 2023? Expectations should not be that high for a new unit. However, part of me wants to say, they're so big, all they have to do is form a shield wall!
Debate is a good thing, and, yes, many don't want it here! They can and will be insulting if you say something that sounds in any way critical of a player, team, or a coach! I've been accused of hating a new qb, which isn't true, but that's how it was perceived.
Case in point:
I like these guys here, but say something they disagree with or think is retarded and....
Everyone needs an escape goat. A really fast one!
If I did you a disservice (conflating your post with those of a poster with a similar handle?) I sincerely apologize. But the specific post I responded to did strike me amiss and IMO, called for some sort of rebuttal. I appreciate your clarification though and I hope this puts an end to any misunderstanding or hard feelings.
No, you have the right doc
