Our yards gained is 107th in the Country at 16.25 yards. Due to penalties we're starting at the 18, 7 yards short of where we'd be if the returns were all touch-backs.

Returns started within the 20 averaged 17 yards (which would be 105th in the Country) & resulted in a starting field position of 21.75 instead of the 25.

Every return started outside of the 20+ yard line resulted in a penalty that left us with an average starting position at the 11 yard line. Without the penalty, these returns only averaged 14.75 yards which is less than our overall average (and would be 119th in the Country). If we fair caught those we'd have started at the 29.25 yard line.

With these stats, we need to change our kick return strategy.

Is there anyone in the country that just has everyone stand still, dodge, run off the field and fair catch every time?

Our kick return strategy for the rest of the year should be simple: Fair Catch. Every. Single. Time.

Absolutely. We don't have a gamebreaker on returns. Let's take the 25 yards and avoid a penalty that almost always seems to happen.

The word abysmal comes to mind. Henderson did well against Tenn as a receiver. But on KO returns, generally speaking...geeze. Etienne should get more attempts. I remember at one point that was a strength for us, back during the leather helmet period. o_O

Speed and vision are good. Not sure running into the crowd and the backs of players is a good strateegery.

But heck... I see the field pretty well from the couch.

    Go Gators.:)

Interestingly, no returns vs USF, they were all touch backs. That might've done us a favor with better field position for our struggling offense.

The kickoff after the safety was a killer vs UK…..

Yet other teams seem to get decent returns versus us

I hate to see Etienne on returns. Just fond the fastest non important guy we have and let him do it. Lol

Or take the 25 and walk. Lol dont wanna see one of our two best backs hurt and teams try.

    My opinion of course. Lol

Can we just practice fair catches?

Choose who you want to be. Let Pearsall do it or fair catch every time.

I wonder if players can be taught to not block in the back on kickoffs?

Just fair catching every time would be a massive improvement in starting field position, and free up practice time for other things. And we have plenty of other things to work on.

"Game Changer" thing needs to be named something different.

I'd imagine BN will evaluate it and adjust accordingly.

    I hope so.

It is beyond me why we don't fair catch each time.
It's like getting about 10 additional yards per possession.
If we had simply done this on our first possession, perhaps we score there instead of giving it up on downs. (Since we stalled out at the 20.)

To me this is math- start at the 25 or our own 15. (Or worse!)
You take the 25 every single time. Yet we don't.
    It's a mystery.

I'm not sure what is more baffling, that we are so bad at kick returns...or that the coaches don't tell the KO team to FAIR CATCH EVERY SINGLE TIME since we end up starting at the 15 or 18 with our weak runbacks.

Seems on kickoffs "Gamechanger" means we help our opponent.
