I think we having a bit of a semantic debate, as I don’t really disagree with your points.

What I was referring to was feeling boastful about winning a game of “pick the longest” straw.

Again, I am quite grateful to be born here. I think nobody would argue that some of the science, art, and innovation hasnt originated here. And now the greatest beer too. I certainly don’t lament my American status. I love Stevie Wonder, IPAs, football (the real kind), The Big Lebowski, hot dogs...there isn’t much about me that isn’t American.

Glad to hear it Rade. The qualifiers 'would' and 'if' in your previous post had me wondering. I'm not doubting your sincerity at all.

Not to sound too proud but,,

I don’t give a rats a$$ wether I offend people by saying I’m a proud American, proud of my heritage, my kids, my career, beliefs, etc.

I 100% on board as to who I am, even though I know I’m not perfect.

I believe this contradiction to be real. I tell my students that scientific threories are the best knowledge that we have on this planet, and also that they are wrong and bound to be updated. I probably sound pretty crazy.

America is constantly self-correcting and reinventing herself.
At least that's what we're supposed to be doing.

I would move to GB tomorrow if not for family and the fact I’m not independently wealthy.

Let me guess all the lefties here are registered as Indies or Green party etc. and that is why so few Dems are reporting they are proud to be an American in this poll?

It isn't always easy, but at the end of the day, I'm proud to be an American. Also, very grateful.

This is a poor assumption on your part. Pride can result from association with an entity.

Have you been to London recently? I go often (8 or 9 times a year, minimum). Last time I was there (about three weeks ago) it felt different. London is like a zombie. Nobody says hello, or even looks anyone else in the eyes anymore. I used to love London. It’s changed a lot over the pasy year or so. It’s just not the same as it was in the past.

I am happy to be an American but disturbed at how those that claim pride are the first to accept the injustices that a truly great country should be fighting against. Throw on some country flag waving music and a beer and boom the country is the greatest and has no issues. Like a so called Christian claiming to have some upper edge on others...claim to follow the Bible but then make nachos and drink beer while watching the bombing of Iraq. Just seems to me that characterizing as being proud should be prefaced with but I am fully aware we have a lot to fix.

Just to clarify at the beginning....

I am NOT Prideful to be an American, BUT, I AM DAMN PROUD to be an American!

I am proud that both sets of my Grandparents immigrated to this Country, through the LEGAL immigration system, to make better lives in this Country.

I am Proud of those who were daring and intelligent enough to develop not only our Declaration of Independence, but also our Constitution.

I am Proud of the men who bravely fought and died in the trenches, and the women who were by the front lines tending to them in WWI

I am Proud of the brave men who fought and died in WWII, and the women who stepped in at home into the tough manufacturing jobs, to keep our need production going for the war effort.

I am Proud of the men and women who fought and supported in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and every other war and conflict.

I am Proud of our Armed forces in the continuing war against terrorism.

I am Proud of our Coast Guard, with their amazing abilities shown every day, from Hurricane Katrina to the Baltic Sea and all places in between.

I am Proud of our men and women in Law Enforcement, our First Responders, Fire, EMT's, etc.

I am Proud of our Country's Motto

I am Proud of our Great American Flag

I am Proud of our Pledge of Allegiange

I am Proud of our songs; "God Bless America" and "The National Anthem"

I sure am Proud that I can freely post this without fear of Government reprisal!

I am Proud of our President of these United States

I am Proud that, because of all these things, I have the FREEDOM to live where I choose, say what I want, shop in fully stocked stores with good food, AND have my "self-protection" legally!

    No, I'm NOT prideful...... BUT...

I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!

What do you see as the difference between being 'Prideful' and being 'DAMN PROUD'?

There is not one example in your list that could not be replaced with 'grateful' or 'appreciative' or 'happy' or 'pleased'.

I didnt say London. My very wealthy Brother in law used to spend a lot of time in London, he told me there are two cities that suck if you don’t have a lot of money, New York and London.

My Dad lived in Galway, Ireland for 10 years and being a lover of history, I found the place really amazing. The west coast is much more interesting than the East. I actually like the weather, the people etc. I would probably check out Scotland or Devon area. I am not much for big cities anyway. If I ever actually learn Spanish, my Dad told me his favorite city while living over there was Barcelona. He really liked the people. My other half is Brazilian, and one country that comes up a lot for Americans looking for a low cost retirement, is Portugal, cheap to live, safe and beautiful.

I’m rethinking my view of Pride after the comments here plus I discussed this with some friends and I think they changed my narrow view of why Pride is allowed, without direct involvement.

See sometimes these debates actually do change ones views.
