Hello all. First thread here, enjoying the site so far.

Just wanted to ask everyone how their politics have impacted their friendships/family (or vice versa). Politics brings out a lot of passion on both sides of the aisle. Has anyone lost or gained friends/family because of their political views?

I have come very close to losing two good friendships. One guy started venturing into the QAnon world and despises anything liberal/Democrat. Another guy is a Trump/Republican supporter and a little more rational, but it's like talking to a brick wall.

My way of handling this is not to engage in arguments with them and change the subject where possible. If I get a stupid political meme, I ignore it. It's tempting to continually fire back at them with my views, but that's just an unproductive use of my time.

    Your thoughts?

Well my in-laws are huge Trump haters and CNN disciples. I’d say after a few drinks the other night I listened better than in the past and conceded maybe we would be better off with Biden for just a little while.
Boy, reading this back it must have been more than a couple drinks.

My wife is one of only 30 or so known Jewish die-hard Republicans, though she loathes the thought of Donald Trump as president. I am a life long Democrat who HATES both parties now and never has voted strictly party lines. We both agree that the Presidential election is mostly symbolic and that voting for Congress should matter much, much more. We both like our House Rep (Republican Mark Wheeler). We discuss who we are each going to vote for, but are so disgusted with our current state of politics, we really do not discuss it much. Her parents, on the other hand, are die hard Democrats who only watch MS-NBC and will attack her endlessly about each and every perceived ill done by the president. Against that backdrop, I look more and more like an awesome, supportive husband by not piling on......I love my in-laws!!!

It seems to me that sometimes people bring up politics because they want to learn what we have to say, but other times they just want to pontificate. With the latter, it's wisest to change the subject as you have done. My friends don't talk politics much. People who are rabid for either side usually do not want me as a friend. I tend to be a contrare. If someone is pushing one viewpoint I challenge it from the other direction. Because of that I have been accused of not believing anything. :)

Have you talked to them about not wanting politics to ruin the friendship? I confess I had to look up QAnon. That one might be harder, but the other friend might be receptive.

I dont talk politics with family or friends and I utterly ignore the insanity in their Facebook pages. Rather be happy than right. No one changes their mind.

Fortunately my family members are on the same page, and two of my brothers are both veterans and political science majors from UF. So they have BOTH the talent and experience to have credible opinions. We don't even have to discuss politics other than to vent from time to time.

It has caused a strain in my relationship with a few family members. One in particular, who I was very close with, can’t get 90 seconds into a phone conversation without trying to start something. We have seldom spoken to each other over the last 2 years, unfortunately. With a few others, we try to avoid it when we’re around each other but there is a feeling of awkwardness sometimes. I really don’t care where someone falls politically but I do take exception to the judging & name calling.

I really don't talk politics with anyone outside of this board. Even friends and family I know align with my views. Talking politics in social settings is grating. This board is my outlet.

My wife, my kids, my four siblings, their spouses and 10 children run about 60/40 Republican/Democrat. My dad is a a hard core Democrat but his girlfriend is a Republican. Nobody supports Trump, not even the brother in-law who is a Southern Baptist pastor.

I live in Trump land and I can't stand him so I'd rather keep my family relationship going rather than argue politics. My wife is the same way so she basically had to unfollow all of my family members on Facebook to stop from getting irritated. I don't discuss with friends either. It's for the best.

There are a lot of strident, pro-Israel Jews who are Republican. Then there are people who disdain the whole Tikun Alom social justice thing. Then there is the reality that people are people and don't always align with the ethnic stereotypes assigned to them, sometimes hating bagels and socialism.

That is me and my wife’s philosophy. No politics or religion will be discussed with anyone we don’t personally know. Only one if our friends is liberal. She’s made a fool of herself with a couple outbursts. Other than that, everything has been fine with friends. I dumped Facebook the first year Trump became president. Not worth the BS.

Fortunately all the people I know who voted for Trump (and might even again) are pretty embarrassed about it, and haven't gone MAGA cultist, so they never want to talk politics. They're mostly just people who will always vote Republican no matter what.

My father is a Trump supporter. Let’s just say it has caused arguments with family and friends. :D. Not between him and I though. We have respectful debates.
