Considering that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not the POTUS or even in a position of party leadership, AOCDS really is a form of derangement syndrome. It's indeed a bizarre obsession when the POTUS and the conservative media are obsessed with a freshman House member whose primary talent seems to be her effective use of social media.

Good point. I hear people say all the time that the Universe has a plan, but deny any god at all.
So a collection of stars and planets have a plan for your life? People grasp at something bigger than themselves.

And I would indeed be worried if AOC was actually in the leadership. She is a freshman with no real power. In fact, Nancy Pelosi, the real leader of the Democrats in Congress has been doing her best to tone down AOC and her friends.

Thanks for the post @chemgator - a lot to digest there. Have been looking at some videos all day and ran across this one that people might find interesting as it relates to the tie in with identity politics.

That statement made me think of the SyFy mini-series Childhood's End. If you haven't watched it you might want to check it out

If she has no real power why does the Speaker have to tone her down?

I don't know why anybody brings up Venezuela as anything other than an OPEC country. It's about as capitalist or socialist as Saudi Arabia or Iran.

AOC has the "power of the pulpit" as long as the media continues to pay attention to her and put her opinions on air. She is Congress's first "influencer", or juvenile female who has popularity and power because of her looks and willingness to tell others how to think. She is a spokesperson for the Democrat Party, whether the rest of the party acknowledges it or not. Who will be the leader of the democrats be when Pelosi steps down and retires? Some schmuck from Iowa who has been toiling in the halls of Congress for 30 years, or AOC, who has the global media by the balls?

The media is (or has) power, as long as there is an audience. A lot of adults probably buy their teenage daughters a subscription to Teen Vogue without realizing that the magazine is advising their daughters to become prostitutes. Few parents would buy a subscription if they knew that their daughters were being advised toward that career choice.

At some point, it is best just to accept biology as a condition of existing on the planet. Like physics, you may be able to bend biology a bit, but don't try to break it. As a woman, there are perks that come with motherhood, like paid time off from work, and a chance to bond with an infant (which I'm told is a positive thing).

Actually, I agree. That being said, the right-wing media and especially Trump have been doing their best to amplify her social media megaphone. She would not be receiving anywhere near the attention that she is currently receiving were not for right's strategy of demonizing her. As far as her future influence is concerned, there's the real possibility that she may end up overreaching. At this point the woman's ego knows no bounds. She has expressed interest in trying to "primary" Chuck Schumer in 2022 or Kirsten Gillibrand in 2024. My guess is that if she tries to do either she will discover that New York State as a whole is not her district in the Bronx. While by conventional standards New York State Democrats are liberal they are nowhere as far left as AOC and her constituents in the Bronx and unlike Joe Crowley who was blindsided by AOC because he didn't take her seriously Schumer will be very well prepared.

Truth is that the leftists cherry pick through all of the aspects of Scandinavian Socialism as well. For example, the poor in Sweden pay the highest effective tax rate of any bracket at just under 70%. The wealthy pay 47%. In this country, the lowest income earners get checks EITC and effectively pay nothing in income tax.

Another interesting fact is that all social services in Sweden are administered by private organizations. So a massive governmental bureaucracy does not exist.

Which is why I've made my "new deal" with American progressives. I will join their fight for "Scandinavian Socialism" when they want to adopt a full mirror image version of how it is actually practiced. Thus, I'm positive I'll never have to join them.

and let's not forget the fact that Sweden is small, highly educated, and basically homogeneous society and culture with strict values.

Apparently, there are things the Socialists aren't telling us!

Socialism 101: All of the Things the Left Will Never Tell You

We're going to have to eat zoo animals? What if they taste bad? Does AOC have any good recipes for zoo animals? If she's going to promote socialism, she should at least provide recipes.
