Naturally, Sully will be on some lists, get lots of "influencer" traffic-driving content, etc., etc. Texas averages almost 1.5K more people and pushes against stadium capacity every home game. They have better tradition at a high level then we do. They'll back the cash truck up for this one, I bet.
I do not believe that is true, but even if it is, Vitello is a fixture on campus, at fund-raisers, etc and he goes to virtually every other UTn sporting team event on the regular. I live here and, as much as we dismiss the Vols, they've been hitting consistently high levels of achievement in all sports under the current AD, though their trophy case of NCs pales in comparison to UF's over the same time. Their fans show up in numbers and even more so when they start winning. UTn put Vitello on the map when others wouldn't have. He seems like he plans to be here awhile. I'm very interested in what the Gator and the Vol head coach do with this UTx opening.
Couple names Id keep eye on..Mingione(UK) & Canham(Org St) Another more darkhorse is Penders at UConn,, but think hes happy where hes at for last 20+ years.
Said it in another thread. There aren't really a ton of obvious major gets beyond Vitello. It's either long established older veterans, or guys with shorter track records. It's Texas, so somebody will go and likely succeed, but I'm not sure I see the move that's gonna shake up the college baseball world.
I know Canham is a lifelong Beav, but w/ Org St having no conference, not sure how much success they will have going foward. I think I heard they will play a West Coast conf schedule next year. but dont think they are a part of the conference.. Will they even have a shot at a auto bid?
If I’m Vitello I just use this to shake down Tennessee for more money. Same with Sully, Van Horn, Schloss, and any other established successful HC.
Heard a rumor on a Vols sports show predicting Vitello is about to become a 2M man. They love the guy. Mingione seems more likely to leave, making under a million and has done great things for the Cats and sec coach of the year. I'm sure a lot of ole Miss fans would be happy to see Bianco move on. He's making huge bucks and has had 2 disappointing seasons since the NC.
I dont think Schlos leaves, i could see Tony V going,, but both aTm & UT have huge facility upgrades coming. Which may play a factor. Especially w/ TV, hes been asking for them since he arrived. I could see his ego saying.. i didnt 'build' this for someone else.
I get that the money isn't fungible, also that I'm also ignoring tax/fringe effects, and I bet no one really has a confident answer, but I'm going to ask anyway... Which produces a better team? The coach a school can hire for $2.5 million per year or the coach a school can hire for $1 million per year + $1.5 million in (HC-discretionary) NIL funds? (Or somewhere in between.)
