Next up is Mississippi State at Florida. The Bulldogs are a pretty good defensive team as is typical for a Ben Howland coached team. Howland's teams are particularly noted for "hedging" screens and if the refs allow a physical game away from the basket it works to MSU's advantage. If the game is called tightly expect MSU to land in foul trouble.

MSU is also very good at blocking shots, so the Stat of the Game will be blocked shot differential.

So predict the score, Most Valuable Gator, and Stat of the Game.

    Game Winners:
    Gardner-Webb @ Florida - g8rboy
    UNF @ Florida - GatorJason
New Hampshire @ Florida - UFSECKINGS
    Florida vs Stanford - 85gator
    Florida vs Gonzaga - g8rboy
    Florida vs Duke - cincinnatigator
    FSU @ Florida - manigordo
Loyola (Chicago) @ Florida - GothamGator
    Clemson vs Florida - gatorbogey
James Madison @ Florida - Singaporegator
Incarnate Word @ Florida - ApexNC
    Vanderbilt @ Florida - gulfgator
    Florida @ Texas A&M - airgator96
    Florida @ Missouri - altalias

    Contest Standings:
    1) GatorJason - 3 points
    2) g8rboy - 2 points
    3) UFSECKINGS, 85gator, cincinnatigator, manigordo, GothamGator, gatorbogey, Singaporegator , ApexNC, gulfgator, airgator96, altalias- 1 point
    2) 43 tied for fourteenth place - 0 points

    Metrics:
Gators now are a respectable #34 in Sagarin ‘s recent poll ( there were times we were 100+)
    20 Florida = 86.92 11 4 77.17( 14) 2 2 | 4 3 | 86.73 21 | 87.85 19 | 83.81 34
Good predictor metric and outstanding strength of schedule.
    Contrast that with State:
    75 Mississippi State = 79.21 12 2 67.87( 328) 1 1 | 1 1 | 78.89 79 | 79.50 69 | 79.21 82

    Pomeroy:
    30FloridaSEC 11-4+18.30 115.8 22 97.5 53
    Gator defense ranking steadily sliding.
    Still top 25 offense.

    67Mississippi St.SEC13-2+10.34 104.7 149 94.4 25
    State looks strong on D...but A&M was a top D 10(when healthy)
    But woeful on offense.

    Prediction: (editted for streptococcus)

Billy shredded that vaunted "hedge" defense crap, which was essentially just a bunch of hip-checking out on the perimeter. If the refs let them get away with it, it really throws you off your game. If the refs would consult the rule book just before the game and look up hip-check fouls, they'll see a picture of Ben Howland's sh*t-eating grin.

    ***Important news is out***
Cheese is unlikely to play and expected to miss this game, out with strep throat, per CMW. Trying to be fair to those that got their picks in may want to rethink their scores. I'm not sure what to expect from this team without Cheese leading the way. Allen does not look like a good alternative and Okauru may struggle if needed to fill 25 minutes of action. Just when we thought the picks were getting easy now this.

We will play for Cheese and get the win at home. Close one, but still counts as a W.

I hope so. Ado has pretty quick feet for a guy his size, but he is a freshman. It would be nice to see him saddled with some early fouls.

Some of the recent rule changes were made to take some of this away. "Freedom of movement" I think was a phrase often used to explain what the rule changes/points of emphasis were about. Howland's current teams are not as physical as his teams at Pitt, but he still coaches them up this way.

Back to 2006 at Indy IIRC UCLA got into serious foul trouble early in that game and Ben Howland was calling time outs to give his players a breather because his bench was limited with so many guys with multiple fouls on the bench and subbing was not an option. In the stands I told my wife that UCLA was in serious trouble even though the score was tight because of the foul situation. UCLA was burning up all their matches in the first half trying to stay in the game.

Mostly we shredded UCLA with blocked shots leading to transition baskets and superior post play in the half court. When UCLA tried packing the paint on D to try to take away our inside game we killed them from 3, like after halftime when Lee Hump went on a tear. BTW, does Lee still own the career mark for made 3's in the NCAA tournament?
