Carolina Panthers Hire New Defensive Line Coach

The Carolina Panthers have announced the hiring of Paul Pasqualoni as the new defensive line coach. Pasqualoni, 72, got his start in coaching way back in 1972 as an assistant at Cheshire High School in Connecticut. Pasqualoni worked his way up the coaching ranks and became the head coach at Syracuse in 1991. Over the 14 years under Pasqualoni's leadership, the Orange boasted a 107-59-1 record, winning two Big East championships.

After being let go following the 2004 season, Pasqualoni made the jump up to the NFL to coach tight ends for the Dallas Cowboys. That was the only season he spent on the offensive side of the ball in the NFL as he served as either the defensive line coach or defensive coordinator at his other stops.

It's clear that third-year head coach Matt Rhule wanted to add experience to this coaching staff this offseason and Pasqualoni is a perfect example of that.

Florida coach Billy Napier is losing Paul Pasqualoni from his off-field staff.

The Carolina Panthers hired Pasqualoni to be their defensive line coach Tuesday. Pasqualoni, 72, was head coach at Syracuse for 14 years and was recently inducted into their Hall of Fame. Pasqualoni had joined the Gators in 2020. He was retained by Billy Napier as the Gators’ Director of Advanced Scouting and Self Scout.

Napier spoke very highly of Pasqualoni in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel. When asked what retaining Pasqualoni meant to the Gators, Napier replied:

Wisdom. Not only is he a very knowledgeable guy, but he’s applied that knowledge. This guy, there’s a difference knowing what to do and then actually taking that knowledge and applying it. He’s solved a lot of problems in his day,” Napier told the Orlando Sentinel. “He’s seen it done a lot of different ways. You’re always looking at people who have perspective, who have maturity — and will give you an opinion. I’m always seeking out opinions. I want somebody that’s different than me. He’s capable of doing that.”

I recall a few plays this year that seemed to have the "freeze option" component (the quarterback stops, or significantly slows, causing the defenders to over run the play and create a lane for the quarterback to run through or open field in front of the pitch man) Pasqualoni liked so much. Wish him the best!

At 72 that might be his last coaching stop. Then again, 72 is the new 52.

Actually, I'm 71 and closing in on 72. I feel great. But I pee too much, can't hear worth a crap, can't remember names at all. To recall the past I have to call a pal from the old days and ask them what we did. Things are good though, but I get cranky and impatient.

I love swearing at people when I'm driving. I refrain from gestures to keep from getting shot. It's silly, I look in my rearview mirror and people are spinning out and running off the road all the time. Darn fools...o_O:p:eek::D

    Go Gators.;)

I will be incredibly happy with CBN if he can find someone who has coached for 50 years, many as a head coach, but also as a coordinator, assistant on both sides of the ball, in college and the NFL, willing to take an off field position to self-scout for us. I don't think there is a real replacement, just hopefully someone with a good resume to do some helpful things. I think a position was made for him, not that he was filling a position.
