Frustrated by the books being removed from school libraries, a Utah parent says there’s one that hasn’t been challenged yet, but that they believe should be, for being “one of the most sex-ridden books around.” So they’ve submitted a request for their school district in Davis County to now review the Bible for any inappropriate content.

“Incest, onanism, bestiality, prostitution, genital mutilation, fellatio, dildos, rape, and even infanticide,” the parent wrote in their request, listing topics they found concerning in the religious text. “You’ll no doubt find that the Bible, under Utah Code Ann. § 76-10-1227, has ‘no serious values for minors’ because it’s pornographic by our new definition.”

The code cited is the Utah law passed in 2022 to ban any books containing “pornographic or indecent” content from Utah schools, both in libraries and in the classroom. It came after outcry from conservative parents groups, who have been pushing to have titles removed.

Based on the new Utah law, something is indecent if it includes explicit sexual arousal, stimulation, masturbation, intercourse, sodomy or fondling. According to state attorneys, material doesn’t have to be “taken as a whole” in those situations or left on the shelf during a review. If there is a scene involving any of those acts, it should be immediately removed.

A Utah parent says the Bible contains porn and should be removed from school libraries. Here’s their full challenge.

The parent makes a valid point, I don't think we should be exposing children to that filth

Not surprised in the least and I'm hoping that something similar happens in Florida.

I mean, they’re right. Has anyone ever actually read the Bible in its entirety? It’s filled with porn and all kinds of other things that the right wing claims to be vehemently against. Better ban it so our precious children don’t get indoctrinated.

People have done it as a gag. Unsurprisingly, the right-wing school districts/boards say that The Bible isn't governed by the same rules they apply to other books.

BRAVOS for that parent! Nothing is more damning, and satisfying, than seeing hypocrites hoisted on their own petard. Unfortunately, she'll encounter the GOP's That's Different Department. The fact is, though, neither left wing democrats nor right wing republicans appreciate that many books, despite offense language, have overriding literary value. The Bible should no more be censored than Dr. Seuss or The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Utah eh? Hmm . . . it's pretty close to Idaho. Hope that parent's house doesn't get burned down.

Yep, that is technically true - full of all sorts of depravity.
Ezekiel says: 20She lusted for the lechers of Egypt, whose members are like those of donkeys, whose thrusts are like those of stallions

So, to recap her boyfriend is hung like a donkey and provides a horse worthy ride. Your interpretation may vary.
Don’t even look at the Song of Solomon.

I've read the Bible through more than once. Part of the definition of porn is its intention. Whoever wrote the Bible did not intend to turn anyone on. I know the only sin left is being judgemental but if the Bible turns you on you're pretty messed up.

On a more serious note I agree it should at the very least be age restricted. Ceetainly for younger children. Perhaps a book you have to request as a teenager. The same would be true of the Bhagavad Gita, Koran and Lotus Sutra and probably some others that don't immediately spring to mind.

I guess this will be a pretty literary post (very generous to call Orwell literature).

this whole gittin' 1's knickers in a twist over books that kids MIGHT read is so idiotic & misguided I am remined of Pynchon's 3rd Proverb for Paranoids.

    3. If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers.

Which leads to this which IMO gets at the real problem (posted for the umpteenth time)

More than once, come on, must’ve put some a little pep in your step, eh?

    JK.

But I once heard that all horror movies are derivatives from the Bible. I used to think that was silly. But as an old dude, and a horror movie savant, I see the logic now.

Having it age restricted due to "pornographic" content would perhaps make it more appealing to some teenagers who wanted to see what the fuss was about.

I've read it through 3 times (allowing my eyes to skim the endless begats) and learned something new each time. It's a comprehensive work that should be considered on several levels. The literal being the most basic and puzzling. And that doesn't take into account the contradictions found in some translations, or the portions misinterpreted or misunderstood. Readers who can't get past the belief it must be literally believed will not likely look for the spirituality or significance hidden in the deeper levels.

Take for instance the confusion surrounding the story of Noah after his are once again safe on dry land. Noah planted a vineyard and made wine from his grapes. He got drunk and was naked in his tent when his son Ham came into his tent and the account says Ham saw his father's nakedness. After Ham told his brothers outside the tent they went in and covered their father's nakedness. When Noah learned what Ham had done he did not curse Ham - he cursed Ham's son. ???

There is a good deal packed into that cryptic account. First thing to rememember is the fact the text often speaks in euphemisms as illustrated up thread in the reference to the Egyptions. All though the reference to Noah's "nakedness" is not clarified or explained in the book of Genesis, it alludes to a prohibition and law yet to be written and revealed in the book of Leviticus. The stories and accounts written in Leviticus were numerous (I don't count begats) generations in the future.

Explanation for Noah's fury at Ham are found in Leviticus 18 and 20.

Lev 18:6 ...‘None of you shall approach anyone who is near of kin to him, to uncover his nakedness: I am the Lord. 7 The nakedness of your father or the nakedness of your mother you shall not uncover. She is your mother; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 8 The nakedness of your father’s wife you shall not uncover; it is your father’s nakedness.

(uncovering nakedness is biblical euphmism for sexual relations.)

Lev:20:10;11 ... ‘The man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death. 11 The man who lies with his father’s wife has uncovered his father’s nakedness; both of them shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.

Ham violated Noah's tent and his wife, symbols of Noah's authority, autonomy and increasing wealth. After doing so he informed his brothers who took it upon their shoulders to cover their brother's violations. It may be inferred Ham's violations were attempts to gain the upperhand over his father and his brothers. His brothers were uncooperative, and refused to assist or condone what Ham had done.

When Noah sobered he knew what Ham had done, he didn't curse Ham - he cursed Canaan - Ham's son. Assigning him a place of servanthood in the tents of his uncles. It may be inferred the cursed Canaan was born to Noah's wife after Ham "uncovered his father's nakedness."

We know that Lot screwed and impregnated both of his daughters after offering them up to the sodomists who were partying outside his home. That story is in Genesis as is the discussion (Genesis 21:22, I believe) which seems to say that a fetus is not a human life, so if a woman miscarries because of an injury to her, the perpetrator is fined, but if he kills the woman in the process, it’s an eye for an eye; kill him boys.
