Well, we’ve had a couple of days of rainy, windy, and cold weather. Sounds like the perfect time to put a big pot of ham bone and great northern bean soup.

As it happens we have a fresh smoked ham bone on hand and ready to cook with.

A tumbler or two of Maker’s Mark works well tonight for myself and Ms. Jan will have a Moscow Mule.

Last night was baked ziti with hot Italian sausage and spinach.

Tonight is leftover turkey tetrazzini and baked ziti.

Bought a 10 pound turkey to smoke either Saturday or Sunday. Multiple requests for another smoked turkey after Thanksgiving dinner. Happy to do so.

Green chicken pozole for dinner tonight. Green because it is tomatillo based. A lot less work than pozole rojo but still takes a couple of hours and lots of dishes to clean.

We are still entertaining cold, wet, windy weather here so we’re going with round 2 on the ham bone and bean soup tonight.

Grilled cheese sandwiches will be on the side.

A tumbler of Maker’s Mark for me and Ms. Jan is going with her chilled wine.

The pork chops last night were a big hit. I gave them a light dusting of Nashville Hot Chicken spice. Since we had black beans, yellow rice and tostones as sides I wanted just a little heat.

Turkey is smoking low and slow on my KJ. And the rain is holding off.

We are still having sporadic light rain showers so cold and wet are accurate descriptions. That said, we’re both pizza hungry so tonight we’re picking up pizza from Johnny’s NY Pizza House.

Tumblers of Maker’s Mark and Moscow mules are the ticket this evening.

Making alote de grano tonight with leftover turkey instead of chicken. It is a Michoacan dish that is like a corn porridge or soup. My wife saw the recipe in the NYT Cooking section but the recipe for the poblano rajas topping was all wrong. I am making them correctly.

Tonight we’re being treated to Ms. Jan’s boneless chuck roast cooked down in chopped vidalia onions, carrots, potatoes, and celery all simmering in Ms. Jan’s gravy.

I will be in charge of the fried cornbread.

It’s still damp/cold here so it’s a tumbler of Maker’s Mark for me and chilled wine for Ms. Jan.

I wanted to make a Brunswick stew with the leftover smoked turkey. I know that traditional Brunswick stew uses rabbit and squirrel and my wife would never go for that. Poor folks meat. Most folks make it now with chicken and pulled pork. I was thinking that the smoked turkey had the smokiness of pulled pork and the tooth of chicken. I was going to add a smoked sausage for the fat that was missing and some additional smoke. But I got overruled.

I love a good Brunswick stew.

Up north they call that a Yankee pot roast. I am guessing you can't call it that. LOL.

Cold and raw today and my wife asked me to make a chopped salad. Weird, but I made it.

We started today at 27* and had a high of 41* so an inside supper it’ll be. I will be making black beans and rice with ground chuck. There will be fried cornbread for our side.

Definitely tumbler weather, mine will be Maker’s Mark. Ms. Jan will have a Moscow mule.

Last night was a ground pork with green beans Thai style dish but not really Thai. I make this quite often and want to add fish sauce but I am vetoed.

Tonight I am making chicken tinga for tacos.

Today was some good news. Last night my Bosch 800 Series dishwasher threw the dreaded E:15 error code that says that water was leaking to the pan under the dishwasher. Usually that is a leaking hose or valve but sometimes is due to a bit of crud built up on the door seals. This morning the E:15 error was gone so probably not a leaking valve but maybe a leaking drain hose. I cleaned the crap out of the seals and ran a load and all was good. I hope that it is fixed. I recently had an O-ring on the upper basket spray arm go bad and got that replaced. Can't get the O-rings but had to buy the entire upper spray arm assembly. Not too expensive and way cheaper than a call to the repair guys.

Continued raw weather here-Low was 30* this morning and the high today was 42*—Inside cooking for sure. Ms. Jan is treating us to one of her chicken pot pies. Piping hot and so good.

Tumblers of Maker’s Mark and Moscow mules are this evening’s call.
