The Gator Track and Field team with some outstanding results on the opening day of the Florida Relays: Joe Fahnbulleh with a 20.10 in the 200 meters, this is second only to Terrance Laird’s 19.81 at the Texas Relays. Thomas Mardal went 248’ 7” in the hammer, that leads the nation. Freshman Caden Monk ran a very respectable 3:45 and change in the 1500 meters, and Clayton Brown won the high jump at 7’ 3 and 3/4”.
Frosh Claire Bryant again lead the way for the Lady Gators with a 21” 11” LJ. More tomorrow including the relays

Stephanie Ormsby’s 15:54 5k was pretty impressive. 3rd fastest by UF female of all time and she is just a freshman as well. First 5k ever on the track.

    Bogator,
You are correct, I posted before the distance events were finished. While we still have a bit to go to compete with the traditional distance powers on the national level, we have made great strides.

On a side note signee Samuel Austin of Ovedia retook the National lead at 1:50.00 flat this weekend. (Actually the laser timing had him under) but the required rounding resulted in the 1:50. Keep in mind he did it with no close competition, and it is faster than any of the Gator men this year.

Looking forward to the teams next year, I think that’s when they will compete for the title again. Looking forward to seeing what Jess Edwards does in middle distance for the women next year too.

The thing I like most about both Samuel Austin and Jessie Edwards is the fact they both have very respectable 400 meters numbers, 47+ for Austin and 56 and change for Edwards, and they both have excellent 1600 and 200 meter times as well.
Andres Arroyo who holds the Florida high school record (1:47:79) for the 800 meters, was 49+ in the 400 meters. Cole Hocker the Oregon freshman phenom didn’t run the open 400 meters. Gabrielle Wilkinson, our leading women’s 800 meter runner did but was 59+ in high school.
Austin and Edwards certainly appear to have both the speed and endurance to improve enough to be National scorers in The 800 meters, and perhaps the 400 and more so the 1500 meters.
