Keeping up with the guys we cheered for last season . . .

Darris Nichols won his opening game as a head coach, beat Emory & Henry, 84-72.

Jordan Mincy won his opening game, blasting Trinity Baptist by 39!

I wish we had Payne this year. Think he was ready to become a player.

Illinois had three projected starters out so Payne got the start tonight scoring four points with three rebounds in 17 minutes.

Aka, with this transfer portal thing, we Gators fans will probably be following several teams (i.e, Gonzaga, Illinois, ?Louisville, etc.) to see how our former players are doing every now and then.

He wanted assurance that he would start . . . and then transferred somewhere he won't start.

    This writeup tonite wasnt promising:

Don’t overlook: Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk isn’t in line for a big role behind Kofi Cockburn and Coleman Hawkins, but the 6-foot-8, 235-pound redshirt sophomore from Belgium provided some good energy and effort on the interior. Notably, he played more minutes than Florida transfer Omar Payne, who had four points, three blocks and a steal but also three turnovers.

yeah - i think all teams will be doing so to some extent.
I am more interested in how our coaches do, particularly Darris, who i really like.

Plus Hawkins plays a mean tenor saxophone. Ever heard his "Body and Soul?" Can't compete with that. :emoji_saxophone:

    Me too.
Payne may end up playing similar minutes at Illinois that he would have at Florida had he stayed: i.e, 18-22 min/g.

Payne must have thought that Kofi Cockburn would leave early for the NBA and perhaps have more of those minutes at center. Instead, Cockburn had returned to Illinois for another year.

However, Cockburn will have to serve a three game suspension because of breaking some NCAA rules - lol, like that can happen these days! That could mean more minutes as a starter for Payne to showcase his talents before being relegated to the bench again.

Kofi Cockburn suspension a 'great opportunity for others' in Illini season opener
