University of Alabama freshman linebacker VanDarius Cowan has been dismissed from the football team for a violation of team rules, according to an announcement Monday from the UA athletics department.

"VanDarius has been dismissed from the team and is no longer a part of our football program due to a violation of team rules," Coach Nick Saban said in the statement Monday morning. "Each of us has a responsibility to represent The University of Alabama in a first-class way, and failure to meet those standards can't be tolerated. We wish VanDarius the very best in the future."

Cowan, 19, from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, was projected to be a contender for playing time in 2018.

The dismissal comes less than a week after Tuscaloosa Police charged Cowan with misdemeanor assault. The statement did not address the arrest.

The arrest was related to an incident at a Tuscaloosa bar last month.

Cowan was charged with third-degree assault, Tuscaloosa Police confirmed. He turned himself in Thursday and immediately posted $500 bond without having to go to jail, which isn't uncommon for misdemeanor charges through TPD.

According to the police report, Cowan is accused of punching Jesse Ray, 26, in the face at High Tide bar off the Strip early on the morning of June 23.

Ray told The Tuscaloosa News that he was entering the bar as Cowan was leaving and said he did nothing to provoke him.

He said he drove himself to the emergency room at DCH Regional Medical Center where he was treated for a gash on his lip that required seven stitches. He has a broken tooth and nerve damage, he said.

Cowan missed part of Alabama's spring practice while focusing on academics. He returned by the end of spring and participated in the A-Day game with the third string at inside linebacker.

absolutely it is PR, Cowan was running on 3rd team and kids do alot worse then that. They have young linebackers that were ahead of him, they will just recruit over it. But lets be clear the kid is not a model citizen and is not someone to be a positive influence for others. He has some issues

When you are deep you can afford to dismiss a few players. Saban did the right thing in this case. Hopefully our staff uses it as a warning to our players. One mistake like that can end your career.

The fact that he missed part of spring practice in order to concentrate on academics is also telling. Sounds like he was in danger of being academically ineligible anyway. For a football player at Alabama that’s a very difficult “status” to achieve, so the comment is telling.

Third team talent, academically shaky and getting arrested for bar fights. Dismissal was not a particularly difficult call for Saban to make.

As usual, Saban made the smart choice here.

And I did like that comment about Lame and his Kiffens.

I see Saban Alabama football as a future ESPN 30 for 30 movie. Like a 10 year Blue Chips movie, rife with academic fraud, paying players, abuse, coverup. Have any of you been to Tuscaloosa? it's a sweaty armpit as is most of the state, sans the gulf coast. Like a whole state that looks like Valdosta,Georgia flat, ugly, hot and covered with Walmarts and feed stores.

That now defunct other site from a prominent newspaper had an article back then on this (he claimed Gator fans tried to get him to fight), and in the comments section someone using a last name of Cowan for a screen name tried to stick up for him and claimed that he wore FSU gear to all of his other visits. It suggests to me that he does not get positive role modeling in the family. Doubt anybody significant is going to be considering him.

Guess you missed the good portion of the state with mountains. That part is quite pretty.
