So begins a tough SEC schedule and a chance for the Gators to land a spot in the dance. They finished their OOC schedule with a solid win over Butler which should give them confidence going into SEC play.

    Chris Harry's take:

    FLORIDA vs SOUTH CAROLINA

    When: Saturday, 7 p.m. (EST)
Where: Exactech Arena/O'Connell Center, Gainesville, Fla.
    Records: Florida (8-4, 0-0); South Carolina (5-7, 0-0)
TV: ESPN2 (Tom Hart and Sean Farnham)
Radio: Gator IMG Sports Network (Mick Hubert and Mark Wise)

    STAKES (The Setup)
Time for the start of Southeastern Conference play.

The Southeastern Conference opener for both teams. Florida, coming off its best wire-to-wire performance of the season in blasting Butler 77-43 last Saturday, has won four of five, while South Carolina snapped a four-game losing streak the same day by beating Division II North Greenville 97-46. ... UF leads the all-time series 45-26. The two teams split a pair last season, with the Gators defeating the Gamecocks in the second of two, 65-41, at Columbia, S.C., behind 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists from point guard Chris Chiozza, and 12 points and five rebounds from guard Jalen Hudson. Florida raced to a 41-20 lead at the half and ended up shooting 46.2 percent for the game, while holding South Carolina to 27.8 percent and crushing the Gamecocks 46-24 on the glass. ... UF is 2-4 against USC under Coach Mike White, but also unbeaten in league openers in White's three seasons with the Gators. ... UF is opening its SEC schedule at home for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.

Match up wise Nembhard and Hudson will be needed to match their 6-6 wing players. I forgot they still have Silva. He can be a pain down low if he stays out of foul trouble. Hayes needs to play clean and box out.

If Stokes gets in I'd really like to see what he can do offensively against Silva. He will have his hands full trying to defend but hopefully his ball skills will give Silva some trouble as well.

Gamecocks Begin SEC Play At Florida Saturday Night
    STARTING FIVE
    > South Carolina begins SEC action on Saturday at Florida, marking Carolina's first road game since the Dec. 8 matchup at No. 5 Michigan. Saturday's matchup will be the 72nd meeting all-time between the Gamecocks and Gators.
    > The Gamecocks are 10-17 all-time in SEC openers, including a 4-11 mark in league openers on the road. Saturday's contest at Florida marks Carolina's fourth-straight season lidlifter away from home.
    > Carolina broke a four-game winless streak with a 97-46 victory over North Greenville on Monday at Colonial Life Arena. Rookie guard A.J. Lawson led four in double figures with 22 points, while senior forward Chris Silva added 21 with a team high nine rebounds. Carolina connected on nine 3s in the contest, the most for the Gamecocks since posting 10 in a home win over Coastal Carolina on Nov. 30.

Graduate student guard Frank Booker sealed the win with four free throws late in the contest.
    > Rookie forward Keyshawn Bryant hails from Winter Haven, Fla., and will be playing his first game in the Garnet and Black in front of his homestate crowd. After a bit of a slow start offensively this season, senior forward Chris Silva is back to his old form, having hit double-figures in each of the last five contests, averaging 15.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game during the stretch ... Rookie forward A.J. Lawson paces Carolina in scoring at 13.8 points per game; he is one of a heralded rookie class out of Canada, which includes UF's Andrew Nembhard ... Senior guard Hassani Gravett paces Carolina from beyond the arc, he has hit 19-of-49 attempts (38.8%) ... Silva has led Carolina in road games this season, averaging 14.5 points and 10 rebounds in those contests (at Wyoming/at No. 5 Michigan).

South Carolina-Florida basketball: what to watch in SEC opener for Gamecocks
    The State By Andrew Ramspacher
    STORYLINES
    1. On the road again
The Gamecocks are 2-4 under Frank Martin in SEC openers, including last season’s loss at Ole Miss.
Carolina’s gotten used to being on the road in this game. Saturday marks the sixth time in seven years the Gamecocks aren’t at Colonial Life Arena to begin league play. Columbia last hosted USC’s first SEC game in 2015.

    2. Pace Watch, Part II
Has Florida become the Virginia of the SEC?
“They play slow,” Martin said Thursday on his Carolina Calls radio show. “So a lot like Virginia, when you’re down 10 to Virginia, it’s like being down 20 to a team that plays fast. Florida’s kind of become that team in our league.

    3. Long distance
A year later, it’s not going to be so easy. The Gators enter first in the league in 3-point defense, allowing teams to make less than 30 percent of their attempts. USC is next-to-last in the league, making less than 31 percent of its 3s.
“They have exchanged Chiozza, who’s a 5-foot-9 unbelievable competitor, for a 6-4, 6-5 point guard in Newbhard,” Martin said. “On that alone, I can tell you it’s a lot harder to pass and shoot over a 6-5 guy than a 5-9 guy.”

We're the only team without a single 20-point performance?
I guess we like to spread the wealth. ;)
