    THE BASICS
    [IMG]
UF forward Keyontae Johnson posted the first double-double of his career in last season's lone meeting with Alabama, an 18-point win for the Gators at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa.
Southeastern Conference play opens around the league Saturday, with the Florida-Alabama game one of five to get things started. ... The Gators aren't pleased with how the non-conference portion of their season played out, but along the way they've played the second-toughest slate among SEC teams to date, according to KenPom.com advance metrics. The Crimson Tide, says KenPom, has played the hardest, with seven of their 12 games either neutral-site or road games (same as UF). Bama will come to town having won five of the previous six. ... Florida trails the all-time series, 75-69, but the Gators have won 14 of the previous 16 dating to the 2008-09 season. That run includes a 71-53 smashing of the Tide at Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Feb. 16, 2019. In that one, freshman point guard Andrew Nembhard went 9-for-9 from the floor on his way to a career-high 21 points in 32 minutes. Freshman forward Keyontae Johnson added 14 points and 13 rebounds for his first career double-double. UF shot 54 percent for the game and never trailed during what was the second game of a five-game winning streak. ... UF is 3-2 against Alabama under Coach Mike White.

Conference play starts for Bama, Florida
    Graham Hall Gvl Sun
Although “clean slate” and “fresh start” are common, if not overused, phrases when it comes to athletics, they’re terms Mike White and the Florida men’s basketball team aren’t shying away from as Florida prepares to host Alabama for the start of Southeastern Conference play.

“I’ll say it: Fresh start. For all of us, really. Great opportunities,” said White. “Our schedule to this point has been very difficult, of course, and continues to get more difficult. I don’t know who you play in this league and say, ‘We’re gonna get healthy tonight against these guys.’ Night in, night out, some of the best teams in the country. Great coaches, great players, great preparation. Great crowds and arenas. It’s exciting.”

Coming off a 102-63 dismantling of Long Beach State University that capped the team’s non-conference schedule — save for a Jan. 25th match-up with Baylor – the Gators aren’t looking back on the first half of the season with disdain, although that doesn’t mean the team wishes things had gone a bit differently, to say the least; boasting a No. 6 ranking in the preseason top-25 poll, UF tumbled all the way out of the rankings despite possessing one of the nation’s toughest schedules. While the 8-4 record wasn’t the intended result, it’s taught the Gators several lessons as they prepare to battle the Crimson Tide (7-5).

“It had ups and downs. Obviously we wanted to have a better record than we have right now, but I think it’s been a really good learning experience for us, and I think it’ll only help us in our (conference) season,” said sophomore point guard Andrew Nembhard, who dished a career-high 13 assists in UF’s 39-point victory over The Beach. “Biggest lesson (so far) is to not worry about the hype and just worry about getting better, really.”
Nembhard, the lone Gator with more assists than turnovers, said the team made a concerted effort to play with an increased pace against LBSU, resulting in the team’s cracking the century mark for the first time in more than two years. For that to happen consistently, UF will have to keep hitting shots consistently, too – something easier said than done, as the Gators can attest to for much of this season.

    Tide's Preview
SEC Play Opens Saturday as Alabama Men's Basketball Travels to Take on Florida
The Crimson Tide and Gators will tipoff at 5 p.m. CT and will be televised on ESPN2
The Tide enters the contest having won five of its last six games, with the lone defeat during the stretch coming in a true road game at No. 21 Penn State by two points, 73-71. The streak is even more impressive considering four of the six games were played away from Tuscaloosa.
Most recently, UA captured its season-best third consecutive win when it defeated Richmond, 90-78, back on Dec. 29 in Coleman Coliseum in what was the final game of the 2019 calendar year. With the victory, the Tide finished the month of December with a 4-1 mark.
    About Alabama
    • Alabama will open Southeastern Conference play on the road for the first time since the 2016-17 season when it travels to Gainesville, Fla., to meet the Florida Gators on Saturday night in the league opener for both teams. The last time the two teams met in a conference opener came back on Jan. 6, 2008 when Florida captured a 90-83 victory over Alabama inside Coleman Coliseum.
    • Three Alabama players average double figures, while seven average at least 8.3 points per game through its 12 contests played. Sophomore Kira Lewis Jr. tops the squad and ranks sixth in the SEC at 16.6 points per game. He leads the SEC in minutes per game (37.2), while also leading UA and ranking among the league leaders in assists (8th - 4.8 apg) and steals (t8th - 1.8 spg). A first-team All-SEC preseason honoree, he also tops the team in field goals made (75) and attempted (168), and is shooting 44.6 percent from the field and 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from beyond the arc.
    About Florida
    • Florida enters Saturday's contest sporting an 8-4 record in non-conference play following a 102-63 victory over Long Beach State in its most recent contest on Dec. 28. It was the Gators' sixth win over their last eight contests following a 2-2 start to the season.
    • Florida is led by graduate transfer and SEC Preseason Player of the Year Kerry Blackshear, who tops the team with 14.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. The former Virginia Tech standout leads the SEC with six double-doubles and ranks among the SEC leaders in scoring (15th), rebounding (4th) and free throw percentage (.835).
    • Sophomore forward Keyontae Johnson is the only other UF player to average double figures at 13.3 points per game to go along with 6.4 rebounds and 29.8 minutes a contest – both of which rank second on the team. Sophomore guard Andrew Nembhard leads the team and ranks third in the conference in assists (5.9) and minutes (34.1) per game, while his assist/turnover ratio (2.4) ranks second-best in the league.

Gators showing signs of emerging from their early-season doldrums

    By Edgar Thompson Sentinel Sports
GAINESVILLE — UF coach Mike White’s team enters 2020 sitting outside the top 25, missing too many open shots, giving up too many turnovers and not earning enough assists.
Things have not gone as expected for a team hoping to lean on an explosive offense.
The Gators’ top-10 recruiting class has not taken the college basketball world by storm either, leaving one of the nation’s popular picks in October for the Final Four searching for itself as SEC play tips off.
The preseason hype long has worn off, leaving White’s squad with a clean slate heading into Saturday’s visit from Alabama.

“[A] fresh start for all of us, really,” White said Friday. “Great opportunities night in [and] night out [against] some of the best teams in the country.
“[We’ll be seeing] great coaches, great players, great preparation, great crowds and arenas — it’s exciting.”
Roller coasters can be too. The Gators’ nonconference schedule certainly would qualify as a wild, at times nauseating, experience.
White now hopes to enjoy a smoother ride as the Gators (8-4) look to build their NCAA Tournament résumé.
UF is 2-4 against teams currently in the top 125 in the Ratings Percentage Index but will face eight in the next nine games. The Gators visit No. 130 South Carolina on Tuesday.
Ranked No. 61, Alabama offers the chance for another quality win, but it won’t come easy.
“It had ups and downs,” sophomore point guard Andrew Nembhard said. “Obviously we wanted to have a better record than we have right now, but it’s been a really good learning experience for us and I think it’ll only help us in our season.”
