A game many of us have circled on the calendar and a game where we have a chance to break the Seminole serve that they have held for too long.

    THE BASICS

Florida and Florida State renew their rivalry that dates to 1951, but has been played annually only since the 1978-79 season. ... The game is expected to be a sellout. ... Both teams opened their seasons earlier this week, but with two very different kinds of challenges. And results. UF is coming off a 74-59 victory against North Florida, while FSU ushered in the 2019-20 campaign with a [IMG]rugged 63-61 Atlantic Coast Conference loss at Pittsburgh, as that league played a series of early season conference games after going to a 20-game season and ushering in basketball to the new ACC Network. ... The Gators lead the all-time series, 43-27, with a 21-8 advantage at home, but the Seminoles have dominated of late, with a five-game winning streak that marks their longest in the 68-year history of the rivalry. ... The last meeting opened the 2018-19 season in Tallahassee, with FSU pummeling UF, 81-60, for the most lopsided victory ever registered by the Seminoles against the Gators. The game was never close, with FSU taking an 11-point halftime lead that grew to as many as 35 in the second half, with guard PJ Savoy's 20 points, including 5-for-7 from the 3-point line, leading the way. UF, which shot just 24 percent in the first half and made only six of 24 attempts from the 3-point line, got 12 points from freshman point guard Andrew Nembhard in his collegiate debut and 11 from fifth-year senior guard Jalen Hudson, while senior guard KeVaughn Allen went scoreless and took just four shots in 23 minutes. ... Coach Mike White is 0-4 against FSU and 2-8 against ACC opponents in his five seasons with the Gators.

Young Gators Brace For Seminoles' Physicality
UF Chris Harry / Senior Writer
Last year, FSU punched UF in the mouth early, but these Gators are much more in tune with what to expect from the physical Seminoles when the two teams renew their 68-year-old basketball rivalry Sunday at the O'Dome.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — And now, a review of the Florida highlights from the team's season opener last year at rival Florida State.
On the game's first possession, freshman point guard Andrew Nembhard hit a 3-point shot 30 seconds in. That was it.

The beat down the Seminoles laid to the Gators on Nov. 6, 2018, stands as arguably the ugliest and most non-competitive effort put forth during UF coach Mike White's five seasons on the sideline. The Gators trailed by just 11 at halftime, but with five minutes left the FSU lead was a whopping 35 on the way to an eventual 81-60 blowout loss that marked the Seminoles' fifth straight win in the series and their largest margin of victory in 70 meetings in the matchup that dates to 1961.

    "It was embarrassing," Nembhard said.

An accurate description, to be sure. Florida State, which was returning the bulk of its starters from an Elite Eight team, was better than Florida last year — but probably not that much better. In fact, a case can be made the Seminoles haven't been so across-the-board better than the Gators to own a run of five straight victories, but that'll be the current string No. 6 UF (1-0) tries to end when FSU (0-1) comes Sunday afternoon to Exactech Arena/O'Connell Center for their annual showdown.

For the Gators, this one won't be about seeking revenge. It can't be, nor should be. Yes, there are players from both teams that were on the floor at Tucker Center in Tallahassee for last season's blood-letting, but the Gators need not concern themselves with payback anymore than the Seminoles should emphasize extending their recent mastery in the series. UF-FSU No. 71 is about there here and now, and where these two are headed.

I want to see at least a couple of our guys bring the fire. Some leadership shown in this game would bode well for the season, especially from Nembhard, Johnson, & Blackshear. Add in some high energy play from a few other guys and I will be thrilled.

Thinking we have a mental edge this year, as well a talent edge.
I could see this being a comfortable win if we take care of the rock.

Don't forget about Johnson as well. He is the glue on this team. If he plays well it opens up everyone else to play well.

Get the feeling the gator players are taking FSU seriously. They’ve had our number way too long. Need to change that and get the W. Players were embarrassed (last year) and want to rectify that.

No. 6 Gators out to halt Seminoles’ streak
    By Gvl Sun Graham Hall
Florida men’s basketball coach Mike White doesn’t shy away from discussing the Gators half-decade of losing to Florida State when the question inevitably arises.

While White admitted “it would be nice” to snap the five-game losing streak against FSU and emerge victorious over the Seminoles for the first time in his UF coaching career, the 1 p.m. tip-off against FSU will more so indicate the state of the current Gators rather than act as a reflection of White’s coaching acumen or a representation of the program as a whole.
The Gators face too many tough opponents — UF’s non-conference schedule is ranked No. 2 by CBS Sports — to be concerned with results from years past.
“It’s always nice to beat an in-state rival. It would be a break-through opportunity for us. As of late, They have, obviously, as of late, dominated this series and we’ve got a chance to end it,” White said, “I don’t know how dissimilar it is to just beating an ACC opponent or an SEC opponent. We’ve got a ton of these opportunities all year. This is the first one. If we’re thinking about streaks and rivalries, and adding noise to the fact that we’re already trying to decrease the level of noise that we’re dealing with in our locker room, than I think we’re doing ourselves a disservice. It’s about which team plays better Sunday afternoon.”

    UF basketball

New lineup aims to end 5-game skid vs. FSU
    Sentinel Sports By Edgar Thompson
GAINESVILLE — UF shooting guard Tre Mann has just one college game to his credit, but the 18-year-old is ready to help the Gators make their mark.

Sunday’s visit from Florida State is chance for Mann’s new team to snap a five-game skid to the Seminoles, dating to 2014 when he was a middle-school student in Gainesville.
“I’m aware,” Mann said Friday of the losing streak. “We’re going to go into practice today and tomorrow and prepare for it, but it would be amazing to be a part of that.”

Mann is one of the fresh faces for the new-look Gators expected to help carry coach Mike White’s program to another level following consecutive second-round NCAA Tournament exits. UF could make a big step at 1 p.m. Sunday when FSU visits the O’Connell Center. The game will air on ESPN. A McDonald’s All-American out of The Villages High School, Mann is a starter in White’s three-guard lineup and instant offense for the Gators.
“Just a natural scorer,” White said following UF’s 74-59 season-opening win Tuesday night against North Florida.
But Mann’s buy-in on the defense has stood out most to his head coach while Mann’s fellow first-year players have lagged behind.

White rewards players who consistently are in the right spot on defense, maintain their stance throughout the possession, contests shots and then block out for the ensuing rebound — all this regardless of one’s level of fatigue or success on the offensive end of the court.

    Tallahassee Democrat Game Preview
Florida State men's basketball looks to continue recent success vs. Florida
    Curt Weiler, Tallahassee Democrat
FSU (0-1, 0-1 in ACC) was left with little time to dwell on Wednesday's 63-61 loss at Pitt. The Seminoles have to hit the road again this weekend to take on No. 6 Florida (1-0) today at 1 p.m.
"We kind of knew coming in what we were getting ourselves into," redshirt sophomore forward RaiQuan Gray told the Democrat.
"We've got to be prepared mentally and I think that we've done a good job of we want to debrief from the game, move forward, head down to Florida Sunday because we know they're a good team. We're on the next game. That's our mentality right now."

As if the Seminoles weren't dealing with enough adversity in their opposition to start the season, they've also had some bad luck surrounding them.

Projected starters MJ Walker and Devin Vassell both missed significant time during the preseason. New transfers RayQuan Evans and Dominik Olejniczak both missed the Pitt game with injuries and have been limited in practice.

Additionally, true freshman Patrick Williams has dealt with achilles inflammation and senior point guard Trent Forrest -- the unquestioned leader of this year's team -- has been dealing with a virus this week.

I realize Mike goes back and forth in this interview in playing up and downplaying this game, and he probably fears having his young kids tighten up. But, I must strongly disagree with our coach that beating FSU would be just "nice" and that this opponent is not "dissimilar" to any other ACC or SEC opponent. Breaking the streak would be a helluva lot more than "nice," and winning this game is not even in the same solar system as beating Ole Miss. This is UF's most despised in-state rival that has been taking your program to the woodshed, coach, might as well get your team's minds around that reality.

Can't wait for this one to start.

What he says behind closed doors may be quite different than what he tells the press. I'd imagine he's just as anxious for a win today as we are.
