The biggest problem is we don't have a starting shooting guard. Lee looks so much better at point than the 2. With Fland out most of the first half with foul trouble, Lee finally looked pretty good. Both on the court together don't really work. Urban is fine as a shooter off the bench but his weak D and little else isn't going to cut it for major mins. We'll beat a lot of teams in a rock fight with 2nd chance points, but I don't see this team making a run in the tourny unless someone unexpected steps up into the shooting guard spot. The tourny is usually all about great guards that get hot and carry a team.
I thought he was pulled for making a bad play or similar. He needs to shoot 100 FT’s a day in practice
This is so true, and an amusing flip from last year where we wondered if we had a pure PG at the start of the year. Maybe we didn’t, but we had three “dudes” in the backcourt as Jimmy Dykes wouid say. This year we have two guys that are more “pure PG”. Not sure that’s the problem as much as the overall shooting %’s. If those guys were both hitting 35%-40% from 3 and doing everything else the same we’d possibly be 9-0 or close to it. Shooting in the 20’s is always going to be rough in the modern game.
There's much that could said about how the officiating is administered (particularly gainst the Gators), trouble is I saw much the same during the run to the championship run last season as well. The thing thats different is there isnt a Walter Clayton, to rise above it all this season. Collectively the guard play hasnt even come close to being average in as far as scoring goes. Substitution is head scratching, this is the time of the season where TG should be putting guys out there to get a feel what for they can do as well as get a feel for the game. Running a seven man rotation like this is the tournement is just odd, would love one of the press guys to push on Todd why he's decided to do this instead of going deeper to the bench?
Yeah I corrected myself later in the thread after watching the replay. I had it at 5.5 Mississippi haha
We have been tested but you must win some of those tests for them to help when the selection committee does its thing.
We sure do miss our backcourt from last year. Lee needs to stop jacking so many 3s. Good game from 2 but 1-7 from 3 seems the norm for him, unacceptable amount of attempts given how bad he shoots them. And again with the turnovers - they had 17 points off turnovers to our 8
We have lost multiple games this year because of our guards inability to hit clutch, wide open 3’s in the final few minutes and Boogie has collapsed under the pressure of the final moments multiple times. Getting stuck and dribbling off himself against Duke and not making an inbound pass against UConn.
I cant understand how front court players can be so bad at free throws. You can crush an opponents spirit by just being able to make 70 to80 percent of your free throws. Its always been a pet peeve of mine. If Bill Cartwright could finish with a 77% free throw average with that funky ass form he had anyone can.
10/42 13/64 Fland and Lee are a combined 23 for 106 on 3point shooting.... Im not pining for our backcourt last year. We lost 3 veteran studs with tons of experience. Can't expect to replace that or their teamwork. That is horrific shooting though. I don't think anyone could expect those kind of numbers. 9 more made 3s puts them at around 30%. Games change as shots are made and teams react but given the slim margins of our losses, 27 points probably has this team undefeated right now.
I’m surprised at the degree of pessimism. There is no chance we are a bubble team. We have played 3 top 5 teams on the road after losing 3 guys to the NBA..and had a chance to win all 3 games. KenPom #3 SOS. They haven’t closed, but it seems that one characteristic of Golden’s teams is that they don’t fold. From the tourney run to Duke and UConn, they have done a good job of responding to other teams’ runs in tough environments. That said, the lack of a catch and shoot 3 point shooter is killing us. You can win without it, but it’s a much harder climb. Haugh is the only person I trust at all beyond the arc. I’m not going to bag on Boogie, but he is not delivering what the team needs. Condon really did himself and the team a disservice by not developing at least a decent 3pt shot. If he could be a threat at least, it would open up a lot for him.
Every top team would have taken Lee and boogie. We have lost to the #1, 3 and 5 teams. Against zona we played phenomenal the first 9 min. Where is that team. Great 2nd halves against both Duke and last night. Could have been blown out instead we fought back and had chances to win or tie despite the inabilities of our backcourt. I’ve never seen 2 high profile players shoot so poorly - is it form, not setting their feet? Both constantly pass open looks in the flow of the offense.
