Former President Obama gave a really strong speech today in the Ebenezer Baptist Church at the memorial for John Lewis. He spoke about Lewis, of course, and the struggle for civil rights. But eventually he turned the subject to voting and the efforts to restrict it.

The three former presidents did the country proud today. Jimmy Carter sent a note too.

He hijacked a funeral and used it to make a political speech and attack republicans. He should be ashamed.

I don't think Lewis was opposed to politics or taking a stand.

Yes, John Lewis would be outraged at President Obama using his death to advance civil rights. That goes against everything for which Lewis stood. If there was one thing John Lewis would have wanted, it would have been for his funeral to be about him, not about how to advance the causes to which he dedicated his life. Shame on you, Barack Obama. SHAME!

Good. Republicans deserve to be called out for their bs, doesn't matter if the occasion is a wedding, a funeral or a bar mitzvah.

Don't think I'd quite file that one under "eulogy".

But if there's an election in the great beyond, my money would be on Lewis by a landslide, after that stump!

Wow. It is truly remarkable how people out themselves here. He gave a speech that highlighted John Lewis’ accomplishments, how those accomplishments affected his life, and how those accomplishments are relevant to issues today—all of which are things Lewis has been for. And even compared the protests of today to the Civil Rights demonstrations Lewis took part in. And how Lewis like demonstrators today was gassed etc. The only way you don’t like that speech is if you don’t like the message.

This was not the time or place. Bringing up George Wallace and Bull Conner does nothing but stir up hate and division.

That is as asinine as complaining about music being played at a musicians funeral. President Obama ,as usual, performed a dignified and high spirited celebration of a good man. Nothing he said was shameful nor anything Mr Lewis did not stand for nor would have not wanted said. Be lucky he holds the office in higher regard than the current occupant or he could have lit that church up slamming Trumps Actions.

This is not the time for the current president to parrot George Wallace and Bull Conner stirring up hate and Division. Truth hurts and you can’t make this faux outrage up.

Note the significant overlap between the people who oppose Lewis's voting rights act and the people who are outraged that Obama "hijacked" his funeral. :emoji_joy:

Yeah, it isn't like it was at a funeral for a guy injured by racist governmental forces in Alabama. Oh, are we pretending that didn't happen for "unity" reasons?

Lewis made good trouble, necessary trouble as he said. He def would not have opposed it at all.

Anyone who thinks such a thing is clueless.

Give George Bush credit for speaking at the service. John Lewis, like he did with Donald Trump, boycotted George W’s inauguration and the two didn’t see eye to eye on many issues. There is a lot of pettiness in Washington and good for Bush to rise above it and give a nice eulogy today.
