    Per Kendall Rogers of D1baseball:

Division I Baseball is on the cusp of being in an incredible position from a scholarship standpoint. This week, Sankey confirmed to Yahoo! Sports’ Ross Dellenger, in this piece, that Division I Baseball is expected to settle on a roster limit between 32 and 35 players, which is a decrease from the 40-man roster that programs will enter the 2025 campaign with. That reality will make the evaluation process even more critical for coaches. However, the most important piece of news from Sankey is about the scholarship limit or lack thereof.

Division I Baseball is expected to permit programs to offer full scholarships to everyone on their roster. So, if the roster is set at 35 players, all 35 could ideally be on a full scholarship – quite a contrast from the current setup, which allows for 11.7 scholarships to be spread over a 40-man roster. Baseball will evolve from an equivalency to a head-count sport like football.

College athletics power brokers still need to decide on the actual roster size. That is still to be determined, though Sankey told Dellenger he expects the number to fall in the ‘mid-30s’. Sources believe the number will sit at 33 or 34, while Craig Keilitz, the executive director of the American Baseball Coaches Association, said his organization believes a 35-man roster is the sweet spot.

Wow. This always felt like one of those things that should happen, but never would.

A positive for the quality of play in D1 college baseball and a very big positive for the young men who play it. But, probably a net negative for the Gators (in that other SEC teams will benefit more), as Sully won't be able to leverage the Bright Futures scholarship quite as efficiently to his advantage.

I don’t think the costs of school is really the limiting factor here. Once they’re that far, there was already all kinds of grants, loans, and academic scholarships available to float them for three or four years.

What really limits the participation of the underprivileged (not just black kids) is the extremely high cost of high level ball at the younger ages. Year round travel ball, camps, and trainers starting at the middle school age are what really make it a sport so expensive and less accessible to those without wealth and parents without flexible schedules.

This will make college baseball something that poor kids can pursue.

Do walkons count on your roster count?

Under the old rules, they count toward the roster limit. I doubt that it changes in the new rules.

I think the reason more blacks play football & basketball is because there are no long bus rides to backwater towns.

In baseball players seldom go straight to the shoe

Black people certainly hated the Jim Crow laws that required they sit at the back of public buses and, even then, relinquish those seats to whites, but I think it was the laws that were the problem, not the vehicles. Earl Butz may disagree with me. In the case of minor league bus trips, my impression is they are universally disliked.

The 34 players on roster would be WITH walkons included. So, for instance, if Mississippi State had 34 fulls, it would have no walk ons. If UC Davis had 20 full scholarships, 14 of the 34 would be walk ons.
