The Florida Gators have added defensive coach Tyson Summers to their football staff as an analyst, as reported by Matt Zenitz of AL.com.

Summers most recently served as the defensive coordinator at Colorado from 2019-20. Before that, Summers spent one year as a quality control coordinator for Georgia after a two-year stint as head coach at Georgia Southern, where he compiled a 5-13 record.

The 40-year-old, Tifton, Ga. native has a total of 19 years of coaching experience, primarily on the defensive side of the ball given his time as a coordinator and a position coach in the secondary. He also has a year under his belt as a co-special teams coordinator.

Summers played linebacker at Presbyterian College in South Carolina from 1998-2001, and began his coaching career in the high school ranks immediately after his graduation.

What exactly does a defensive analyst do? Does he work in a coaching capacity or does he break down film? I’ll admit, I don’t know.

Unless our defense gets better, I'm going to have a breakdown.

    It's a great question.
From what I've seen .. they do whatever the head coach needs them to do
While avoiding breaking NCAA rules on "coaching."

Florida does things differently and have defensive analysts work with the offensive coordinators and offensive analysts work with the DC. Our new QB Coach worked with Grantham last year to help them prepare for offenses and review game film of what opponent offenses were doing.

Mel Tucker brought him with him when Tucker became the head coach at Colorado after leaving as Georgia's defensive coordinator. When Tucker left Colorado and became Michigan State's head football coach, the Buffs hired Karl Dorrell...and Dorrell kept Tyson Summers as Defensive Coordinator. As one of the posts above points out, Summers actually produced better results in 2020 than 2019 but still was fired. Dorrell said he wanted to hire someone he was "More comfortable" with. He elevated the Defensive Line Coach to take over from Summers.

Tyson is the son of former UF football player Andy Summers (mid 1970's) who has since passed. The two articles below are real tear jerkers.

"...The little boy [Tyson] hung on to his memories of his father. He wore a Gator uniform to school once a week knowing full well the ribbing he would take. Once a season, he and his mother, Mary Ann, who met Andy while she was also at UF, would come back to Gainesville for a game. He saw Emmitt Smith run and Shane Matthews throw. He was a Gator all the way. It was a family thing..."

Game is a big deal for UAB assistant

Hope he’s great and may be. Seems Bama has 15 head coaches doing this stuff.
