Here’s my moment of optimism for Mullen. He’s prepping to clean house on the defensive side of the ball after this season. Firing Grantham puts one of the staff members in charge or elevates an analyst to take over. Neither play out well in the off season, rip the badaid off in December. Hire a new DC with some assistants that recruit like maniacs AND develop talent and hire a special teams coordinator. Mullen has three glaring issues right now in his defense, special teams, and recruiting. He can cure a lot of that on the defensive side of the ball and make room on his active staff for a special teams coach.
I'm okay with his statements. Coaches are a weird lot. When he turns it back on himself, that's good. For him it's huge. Going into the Cocktail Party I'm not sure we can expect too much. A good showing. A win. A respectable showing for posterity? There is huge improvement on "D" this year compared to last. Are we were we want to be? Heck no. On offense guys are doing weird stuff, throwing to the other guys. On "D" guys whiffing on tackles. Giant open holes. I want massive improvement and changes like the next guy, but if you look across the football landscape everybody is fighting for the playoffs. Four teams will make it in. Last time I looked we were unranked and a long ways from making it in. Last year Mullen hire a couple of new coaches. This year he really needs to get that handled-get to the root of the problem. Who is the defensive genius lurking out there that can bring in the big guys and make Gainesville his home for a while? All of us are hoping that this gets handled soon. Now, is not the right time. After the Jax game? Maybe. Go Gators.
Taking personal accountability for your coaching actions is a good first start... for a 1st year coach. He has some catching up to do. Does he want to go down with the ship and his lacking crew? Or does he want to be more like Saban and do what's best for our football team in the long run... and for what's best for Gator Nation?
MAC could still be here without the threat nonsense What are we going to do when the D looks good for a game and choker gets an extension
To be fair He didn't have anything to apologize for or take accountability his first 3 season with us. They were all pretty good... this year ? Ehhh
I can name one, who didn't even insist on waiting until the end of the season. His office is probably right down the hall from Grantham's.
Early signing day is 12/15. Need to pull the bandaid now and start looking so you can hire someone within 24 hrs of the end of the season. So they can contact recruits as quick as possible.
I wouldn’t be against the move either but I’m also not against the idea of firing him right after the FSU game and spend between now and then deciding on replacements. Keeping some order of continuity on staff so things don’t fall apart even more. If the head coach needs a coordinator in order to sell his program he is the wrong head coach. If top rated defensive recruits were signing on to play for Grantham we lose them, that’s just reality. The kids should have faith that Mullen and/or the university is going to hire quality defensive coaches. If they don’t that is on Mullen and his inability to sell where we are going.
I think he is. Did he enjoyed losing to KY for the 1st time in 38 yrs? Or enjoyed watching FF started over KT, or enjoyed we wasted generational talents to have shot at NC? Nah, it's all good. Dan has done pretty good his 1st 3 yrs.
