But he only bats from one side of the plate and I bet he doesn't drink to excess.
As a kid I remember very well the epic Mantle/Maris home run battle.
That was exciting.
I do as well.
And I remember hearing crap from the generation older than I was that Babe did it in a 154 game season so that Maris didn't really beat the record. But Babe didn't face the level of pitching talent that Maris did. And Babe didn't have to compete against any African American players.
In 1961, late in season with the HR title on the line, Mantle got injured and missed a few games, giving Maris sole shot at 60+. Interesting that they were roomies in NY City.
Maris hit 33 the next year then later on decided to retire. Augie Busch, owner of Bud and Cardinals, wanted him for a couple of years and offered him a Bud franchise. He played well for St Louis and they went to WS. Maris became Ocala Budweiser distributor.
Mantle , on retirement, made a living as "Micky Mantle", just like Joe DiMaggio. Mantle was paid $100k per year (in today's money like close to $1.0M) by an insurance company to show up and insurance agents annual meeting. I think he also owned a bowling alley in Dallas.
As an aside, odd factoid. Babe Ruth was a big HR hitter...the obvious. He also hit for a high batting average. Known for his big swings. But the never struck out 100 times in a season.
Ah, the good old days. Loved them.
I wonder how Pete Alonso would have done in Home Run Derby against guys like Mantle and Mays.
Yep, and I wonder how @wingtee would have been matched up against guys like Sandy Koufax and Juan Marichal….
If it’s pulled up to 45’ BP I can hang with anyone! I’ll give u 300 pitches
No where near as well as Pete would have stacked up with Mays and Mantle.
toGatorfan 2020- my father was in his first year as the traveling secretary of the Yankees that year, so our family was able to take in some games at the stadium. The "team box" (seats) was nothing like today's luxury suites!

Don’t you think hitting is becoming a list art form? Seems like more players are hitting like Dave Kingman snd earning big contracts today.
Maris had some relationship with Oak Hall in Gainesville. Son or grandson was the coach. Something like that. The field is named after him I think. Or it was 20 years ago.
Thank You Analytics of the new generation that more than likely never played the game.
I really miss our ol’school approaches.
Please tell me your Dad was NOT George Costanza !!
