In the days preceding Election Day and on the day itself, at least 4,900 phone numbers texted ”‘Hillary’ or some derivative,” prosecutors said in a press release, “which had been used in multiple deceptive campaign images that Mackey and his co-conspirators tweet.” It was not immediately clear if anyone failed to vote as a result of Mackey’s scheme. Prosecutors said that 99% of the texts received by that number were sent after Mackey first posted a deceptive Hillary advertisement from one of his social media accounts.

If they attempted to vote by texting Hillary because of something he put on twitter or facebook maybe he was right.
I imagine the line for when political lies/schemes cross from being protected speech into criminal activity is not necessarily clear. I don't remember the details but seem to recall charges over "fake" primary candidates who were put on the ballot just to throw a wrench in an election to help a particular candidate. I think there have also been other cases of people charged for spreading lies about voting times or methods of voting. I could be wrong but imagine these sorts of charges have been appealed before.
Very dumb - most of the GOP actively suppresses black votes through legal schemes. Just this week, after overriding a veto and buying a State Supreme Court seat, the NC Legislature released newly gerrymandered maps showing 3 Dem seats and 11 seats in a state that went 50-49 Trump. They have not yet figured out a way to suppress women. But they will
maga is losing voters due to changing demographics and maga's platform of grievances, anger, and revenge has run its course (see 2022 mid-term). Our country needs to watch for more of this cheating in 2024. “So look. All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes"
