Lugo & Hightower Shine in Complete-Game Victories
GAINESVILLE – The No.8-ranked Florida softball team won two more games on the second day of the Bubly Invitational as the team picked up victories over North Dakota State, 1-0, and Longwood, 11-0 (5), at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.
The Gators (9-1) picked up two complete-game shutouts behind the arms of junior right-hander Natalie Lugo and sophomore Elizabeth Hightower. Lugo (4-1) struck out seven of the 24 batters she faced and held the Bison to just two hits and a walk on 84 pitches.
Hightower put up similar numbers in the following game against the Lancers as she struck out eight of the 17 batters faced and limited the opposition to just one hit and a walk on 81 pitches.
Offensively, the top of the Florida lineup produced four of the five hits in the game against North Dakota State. Junior Hannah Adams (2-for-4) provided the walk-off highlights with her RBI single to left field that scored Sophia Reynoso from second base. Kendyl Lindaman, Charla Echols and Jade Caraway tallied the other three hits in the 1-0 victory.

Caraway started the rally in the 7th inning and was moved into scoring position by a perfectly executed SAC bunt from Hannah Sipos. In the next at-bat, pinch-hitter Jordan Matthews drew an intentional walk, which then prompted Reynoso to reenter the game and the opportunity to score the game-winning run.

In the second game of the day against Longwood, UF's offense nearly produced its fourth 10 hit performance of the season, but settled for nine in the shortened five-inning game. Adams (2-for-2) once again turned in a multi-hit game, while freshman Baylee Goddard (2-for-3) produced the first of her young career.

Florida squeaks by North Dakota State, run-rules Longwood in double-header
    Alligator Graham Marsh, Sports Writer
One came down to the final inning, the other was over in five.
In Florida’s two victories on Saturday in the Bubly Invitational at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium, Gators’ two games could not have looked more different. The first contest against North Dakota State, UF barely squeaked out 1-0. But in the second game against Longwood, Florida thoroughly dominated the Lancers 11-0.
The first six innings of the initial game against NDSU were a defensive struggle. Neither team came close to scoring with UF never getting any runners even to third base and the Bison only getting one.

“We try too hard sometimes,” coach Tim Walton said. “If we just trust in our hard work we’d probably be a much better offensive team, and probably a much better team overall.”
Florida pitcher Natalie Lugo had a strong showing in the circle, as only two runners ever got on base. But while the orange and blue’s defense shined, its offense did not.
Bison pitcher Paige Vargas was having about as successful of a day as Lugo was. The sophomore allowed just five hits through the entire contest.

But then the seventh inning happened.

Anyone go to the North Dakota State game and have observations to share? With all due respect to North Dakota State, this seems concerning.

They had a good pitcher. Not sure about the movement. Rise ball . Had good velocity. They made several web gems in the field. Some well hit shots were at defenders.

squeaking it out was probably good. A character test. Didn’t see any “panic”.

Thanks, that is good to hear after the Michigan game, where panic was written all over the team. Perhaps that slap in the face was a good thing early! The team has been MUCH better defensively since then.

Have you listened the radio broadcast this weekend? Those 2 guys sure like to ramble
and they don't keep up with the pitch counts.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Whatever that guy's name is, I know all about the apartment he lives in, the workouts he does at Southwest Rec, and what his roommate is like. While that might be good conversation over a beer, not so much when trying to keep up with the game.

Plus, I can't have the live stats up as a supplement because the radio broadcast is about 90 seconds behind the live stats (probably required so they can dump if someone says a curse word).

    As to this tourney....

I'm worried about Danni Farley. I've been high on her since she arrived (and she has a bat) but she's struggled a bit this weekend and CTW has pulled her almost immediately. From a confidence perspective and/or experience perspective it might have been good to let her at least try to work through it, especially with a double digit lead.

Little surprised we beat Florida A&M only by 2-1. Good pitching, nice defense but where are the bats? Maybe they need a couple of games to get ready for SEC pitching. The Sec is one super strong softball conference.
