LSU reportedly considering active SEC coach to replace Paul Mainieri

If you missed the big news from Baton Rouge on Friday, long-time baseball coach Paul Mainieri is retiring at the end of the season. This news comes after LSU was eliminated in the first round of the 2021 SEC Tournament.

The 63-year-old Mainieri has been leading the LSU program for 15 years and has more wins than any other active NCAA Division I coach. The two-time SEC Coach of the Year led LSU to the national title in 2009 and nearly did so again in 2017 but the Tigers lost to Florida in the national championship to finish as national runners-up.
Interestingly, the coach that beat LSU is reportedly among the candidates to replace Mainieri in Baton Rouge. That’s according to Glenn Guilbeau
    Lafayette Daily Advertiser:

Among the candidates LSU is considering to replace Mainieri is Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan, who beat LSU to win the 2017 national title.

comes from SDS so it may just be clickbait

I would think everyone is a candidate when a top 3 at worst job opens up.

W/that said, I see no benefit of Sully leaving for LSU,, pretty close to lateral as it gets.

  3. It's being reported by D1 Baseball that they want Sully so it's legit but whatever. Sully will probably get a raise here.

IMO Scott Stricklein (our AD and not the baseball coach) is in a tough position after building a new baseball venue so that he could build yet another indoor football facility. He might not have the cash to pay Sully if he gets a great offer.

And how much is Sully loyal to SS? He might have been more loyal to Foley.

  6. We're not losing an elite coach in any sport due to money. It's entirely possible LSU/A&M will reset the standard salary range for elite coaches but Stricklin isn't losing Sully over money.

Especially after the new $65 million dollar love offering was constructed for Sully's use. But who knows. Some people just like a challenge

Didnt realize Manieri was that old. Sounds like a bidding war between the corndogs and aggies for a new coach.

he aint going nowhere IMO. If didnt go to Texas, with easier path to post season. I dont see him going to what IMO is a slightly more difficult path,,no Fla recruiting etc. Call it the same for arguments sake. still no reason .

An extra few fans in stands is about only benefit I see going to LSU.

Didnt LSu go after Sully last time??

  16. Vitello at Tennessee is either getting a very nice raise or he's going to one of them. Beyond that I think Dan McDonnell would be a great candidate, he's done about as much as possible at Louisville and he can build a better team at either opening (plus recruiting in Kentucky has gotten harder with UK's new ballpark).

That is very true. LSU, Arkansas, Miss. State and Ole Miss pack their stadiums during normal seasons for baseball. Gator fan support is average by SEC standards.
