LSU left-hander Jacob Hasty, who made 13 appearances late in the season, including one start in the Southeastern Conference tournament, has entered the transfer portal. Hasty emerged as a key bullpen piece in April and finished the season with a 3.55 ERA through 25⅓ innings, allowing 14 hits and 10 earned runs, while striking out 28 and walking 15. He was a key piece in LSU's 12-3 victory May 8 at Alabama, where he tossed four innings, allowing just two hits and no earned runs while striking out four. He is the first pitcher to enter the portal after pitching coach Jason Kelly left to become head coach at the University of Washington, and according to a source close to Hasty, he is waiting to see who LSU's pitching coach will be. Players who enter the transfer portal have the option to return. LSU was short on left-handed pitchers this year after Javen Coleman underwent Tommy John surgery. For most of the season, Riley Cooper was the only lefty seeing regular time on the staff. Trey Shaffer, a graduate transfer from Southeastern Louisiana, made 11 appearances and has no eligibility left. LSU has five left-handers in its 2022 recruiting class, but two of them are ranked among MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects: Robby Snelling (No. 16), Michael Kennedy (No. 87). Right-hander Dylan Tebrake, a two-time Big East pitcher of the year from Creighton University, announced his commitment to the Tigers earlier this month, and Vanderbilt pitcher Christian Little posted on Instagram that he was at Alex Box Stadium on Tuesday. Tebrake is also draft-eligible but is not listed among the MLB Top 100 prospects. FOR MORE LSU SPORTS UPDATES, SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER AT THEADVOCATE.COM/LSUNEWSLETTER
Christian Little, a rising junior right-hander from Vanderbilt, has committed to LSU. Little posted on his Instagram a picture from behind home plate at Alex Box Stadium on Tuesday and committed Friday. Related: LSU picks up freshman home run record-holder from North Carolina State This is the fourth player and second pitcher LSU has brought in from the transfer portal this offseason. Little will add depth to a staff that struggled for much of this season and, in Johnson's words, "ran out of bullets" in the NCAA Hattiesburg regional. This year, Little posted a 3.72 ERA with 46 strikeouts and 17 walks through 38⅔ innings. Though he mainly came out of the bullpen, Little did make three starts, including one against LSU in May. His longest outing as a starter was four innings against Georgia, when he allowed three runs on five hits, striking out four and walking two in the 19 batters he faced.
Johnson: Leaving Twins for LSU 'toughest thing' This might be the best pickup for LSU. Great pitching coach. LSU is paying big dollars for coaches. Name coaches attract talent.
I think the pitcher from UCLA that just committed to LSU was a target of UF. It seems LSU is a little more aggressive in the transfer portal than most or they are taking advantage of the NIL thing
Glad to see we are trying to address the pitching situation. Hopefully we can get the Southern Miss guy, Hurston Waldrep. Central Michigan's Andrew Taylor is out there as well. LSU must be ahead of the game in NIL - they are killing it on the portal.
LSU baseball's transfer portal still running hot with big-name comings and goings LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson pulled no punches after his Tigers were eliminated in the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional by Southern Mississippi. The biggest difference between the two teams, Johnson said, was on the mound. Improving LSU's pitching staff has clearly been a big offseason priority. Johnson has already brought in two-time Big East Pitcher of the Year Dylan Tebrake from Creighton, Vanderbilt reliever Christian Little and even Minnesota Twins pitching coach Wes Johnson to run the show. Wednesday, Jay Johnson added another important and impressive arm, getting a transfer commitment from UCLA right-hander Thatcher Hurd. Check out Hurd's credentials with the Bruins from last season before his campaign ended because of injury. Of course, the transfer portal giveth and taketh away. A familiar Tiger veteran and a catcher with local ties have entered the portal. In all, 10 players from the 2022 team are in the portal, though they can choose to return.
Mat— They have also hired away the Minnesota Twins pitching coach Wes Johnson to LSU. He went from a $350,000/yr salary to a $750,000/yr salary—go figure..
From the Advocate sports desk Jay Johnson put the finishing touch on his new staff hires by adding Josh Simpson. Simpson has been a south Texas and Louisiana scout for the Texas Rangers for the past seven seasons. Before thatm he was the head cocah at New Mexico Junior College from 2008-15. The LSU Board of Supervisors on Thursday approved a price increase for baseball season tickets and parking for the 2023 season. General seating will see an increase of between $40 and $160 per season ticket; club level will see an increase of between $110 and $210 per season ticket; and suite level will see an increase of $110 per season ticket. In addition, the changes allow for LSU to increase the cost of a season-parking pass up to $25 per lot, per season. The approval does not mean the price will go up every season, but it can increase without the approval of the board of supervisors. The increased revenue based upon past attendance is expected to be $840,000 for the Tradition Fund, which is the annual seat contributions to the university’s athletic department. The last time LSU season-ticket prices increased was 2019.
Exactly. If you insist on writing about LSU baseball, at least put the words “LSU baseball” in the header so we can skip it if we don’t want to read about it.
