What the scientists discover during their year in the frozen north will help them forecast the future of the entire planet. As Arctic ice vanishes, many scientists expect the steady stream of air that pushes weather across the Northern Hemisphere to wobble, producing periods of punishing cold, brutal heat waves and disastrous floods.

That’s already happening. The polar vortex that gripped the Midwest this winter, the fires in California and lingering hurricanes like Sandy and Florence are all thought to be domino effects of this instability. Unless humans take drastic action, Earth is on track to exceed the threshold for dangerous warming in a little over a decade, the UN has said. These scientists are racing against the changing planet to understand what’s happening — and what is yet to come.

Struggling on the sea ice off Alaska during their training this April, they get a taste of how tough the task will be. They are steeling themselves for what awaits at the pole: profound isolation and protracted darkness, laborious experiments, cold that can plunge to 45 degrees below zero. There are countless ways the Arctic might thwart and threaten them at every turn.

“But if we can do this right,” says Melinda Webster, a sea ice expert at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, “it’s going to give us a huge leap forward in our understanding of Earth and how it’s changing.”

Would be funny if they got stuck in the ice as they traveled like other research projects that headed there with this man-made global warming scam in mind.

I like the spin about the winters now however as they assure us man causes all these weather changes when the sun is the main driver. I guess the snow will be gone in some areas didn't work out too well for them.

For being a part of the group that rails against the “elites”, you seem to possess an awfully small amount of respect for the intellect of other people.

Meanwhile... even back in 2015 we see this happening in Antarctica. Interesting... Watch... the Leftists here will dispute NASA's findings.

Yep. Add “science” to the growing list of research and facts Trump Followers don’t believe and consider “fake”.

I dont think climate change advocates were done any favors by Gore's documentary An Inconvenient Truth. That he won an academy award for that piece of hyperbole was ridiculous.

These scientists were telling us about 50 years ago that burning fossil fuels was going to put the planet in a deep freeze and now they want us to
believe their global warming nonsense. Anything to keep the checks rolling in I guess. :D

I know better than to think truth actually matters, but there is an explanation. Early research attempted to balance two competing effects: greenhouse effects with this fine particle effect. The greenhouse group was proven correct over time and with empirical studies. This is actually how science works. They were always the larger group, but there was a group that believed this theory as well, until it was proven to be much smaller than they initially thought by further study.

    Obama will cause a recession.

    Obama will create death panels.

    Obama will take our guns.

    Obama will impose shariah law.

Obama will try to stay in power for a third term.

Does this mean that you won’t trust any republican predictions ever again?

Yup I learned that in Mr Berry's 7th grade science class.....hard to believe I know more about the climate than all these scientists.

Also since 1970 we (the US and Western Europe) have been very successful at reducing the volume of particulate emissions.

Huh? We are discussing scientists and their studies. In that Al Gore subscribes to the theory that greenhouse gases like CO2 affect climate by increasing temperature and that effect is predominant to any negative effects from fine particulates, sure.

The scientists are using FLAWED MODELS based on their own conjecture and assumptions, and they are NOT based on the facts from ice core samples of the past climates that they have unearthed... It's a money and power grab, plain and simple. Plus all these scientists are being paid by people on the Left in all branches of world governments, including ours.

What is your background in statistics from which you can declare models flawed? All statistical models have assumptions. What specific assumption are objectionable to you?

And I explained the ice core issue to you in the past, but if you would like to rehash it again, we can do that.

We investigated the subject for years in the past... Some people might have forgotten that already. It might have been discussed even before you were a member here, MD.

I remember specifically providing you models from Nature and Science and you not having any actual statistical criticisms of their methodology, just not liking the results.
