I've always hoped Godwin would be the guy if Sully left....he would absolutely kill recruiting in state
There was a pretty good pipeline back then between Ray Tanner and Jeff Johnson (HC @ Chipola) for players. The way I remember it was USCe players who were partying and not going to class so much got transferred to Chipola to get their grades back up while still getting a chance to play good baseball and it also gave Tanner better insight and information on Coach J’s players.
It wasn’t Tanner per se…..the key to South Carolina and Tanner for that matter was Jim Toman. One of the best recruiters of all time. Toman went into become head coach at Liberty and Mid Tennessee State. He struggled with alcohol at times which ultimately causes him some issues.
Yes, Coach Toman recruited Alan hard out of HS. (His top two guys he was going after that year were Alan and Gavin Floyd). He was at our home in Marianna and actually ate supper with us. Ms. Jan fixed her Sunday pot roast/gravy and mashed potatoes. Coach Toman loved to eat!
As for Kingston, he should land on his feet somewhere. Perhaps he underachieved by SC standards but he has won in the past. Kingston made a regional 2 of his 3 years at USF. If the SC choice is Walter, they will probably need some patience. Took him awhile to win at Wake and Id say Wake was a bit of a disappointment this year, not even getting out of their regional. Of course he has more to work with at SC.
I see them keeping the interim Monte Lee as head coach. He's great friends with Ray Tanner as he was an assistant on those great Shamecock teams and has over 500 career wins at Charleston and Clemson.
Not keeping Monte around? Seems like a shoe in and the guy they brought in for when the last guy ultimately failed.
he’s got a great track record. He is up in age, but SC seems to do good with older coaches. I think he’s someone that can at least get the program pretty decent again.
