You may have noticed that the deer were wary, but not nervous as long as he kept his distance. Although it is true that a full-sized Gator like that one can run a fair distance at 25 mph, deer, even fawns, get up to speed really quickly and have a big advantage on a 1.5 ton Gator due to their relative lack of mass they must apply force to, to enable movement.

Given the size of the deer, he looked about 11-12 feet to my eye.

Gators, by the way, far, far prefer swimming Dogs to Deer due to comparative ease of acquisition.

If a gator ever comes towards you run, then zig L or R, they run well in a straight line for a short distance, but dont corner well.

Can you imagine poking around in the sawgrass or palmettos for your ball and come face to face with this fellow?

Watching our goal line offense the last couple of years I have seen no evidence that they run well in a straight line for a short distance
