Italian motorway bridge collapse kills 11

Doesn't look like it is over water, at least I didn't see a river in any of the pictures. Someone got very lucky in that truck that stopped right near the edge.

Edit: It did cross the Polcevera River.

Damn ... looks like the bridge also cross over other roads so there were likely cars under it, too. Someone said they saw lightning strike the bridge. Never heard of lightning causing a collapse before.

Bridge collapses almost always have a different final cause but shoddy construction usually is in there somewhere.

The bridge was finishied in 1967, so my guess was that it wasn't maintained properly.

    lightning strike on metal bridge

"It was just after 11:30 when we saw lightning strike the bridge," eyewitness Pietro M all'Asa was quoted as saying by Italy's Ansa news agency. "And we saw the bridge going down."

Article says they were shoring up the foundation at the collapsed portion of the bridge.

    Take note millennials.
The EEC says that's an acceptable consequence of socialization.

And the cons think bridge inspections are a waste and this is something that the free market should be left to sort out ...

    You're so wrong.
This is the direct consequence of top-down, centralized control.

Then how do you explain the bridge collapse in a place like Florida, where the governor, the state house, the state senate are all cons? Bridges only collapse in liberal areas?

    Similar story.
    Excessive spending, deficits.
The difference is we haven't run out of other people's money....quite yet.

Not all dems are socialists so no. He actually narrowed it down to a specific group.

Saying socialists are responsible for collapsing bridges is a using a pretty broad brush. It's slightly more narrowed down than saying "Conservatives" but not by much, esp. with the modern right wing definition of "socialism".

Perhaps, but around here we generally see the whole group lumped in. Most of us are smart enough to know that most liberals are not true "socialists"...So to me that is a narrow group.

You can rationalize it any way you want, but plenty of posters on this board accuse Democrats of being "socialists" yet I doubt Obama and the current Democratic party has much to do with that bridge, or are you really going to claim that wasn't the connection @ThePlayer was trying to make with his comment on socialism being responsible?
