Your fans want you to take a team with three losses and beat the #1 team (undefeated) or The fans want you to get fired if you don’t win.
Idk the point of threads like this. You’re going to criticize people for staking everything on one game but you yourself won’t acknowledge what’s happened the rest of the season and the last 8 P5 games? I don’t think there’s any world where Mullen will be fired this year, but he’s definitely dead man walking (meaning next year better be good) if UGA blows us out. If we keep it close or win it cools his seat significantly, but he better handle Grantham in the offseason or else it’ll be hot again. And any universe where Grantham gets extended will lose the fanbase. Or if AR transfers due to Mullen choosing EJ. Even if we dominate on defense and beat UGA.
Everyone has a job and our jobs come with expectations. Right now Mullen is below his level of expectation. To be clear. That expectation does not mean he needs to win it all every year. That expectation is that he has his team prepared and ready to compete while increasing the level of talent on the team. That he has not done in the last 10 games.
And, that, is the real crux of the issue. Now Mullen has to run the table to douse the flames. With the exception of Georgia, who I don't think anyone is beating, that is quite possible. But, now he has put himself in the position of having to beat the most complete team in the land on neutral ground (with no Championship game reward even possible for a win).
If we play two teams ranked number 1 in the country, Om not disappointed in these losses. It is the LSU and KY losses that are terrible and impact recruiting
You're allowed to lose to better teams but it makes it harder when you lose multiple winnable games against teams that definitely are better than you.
I don't think losing two games you shouldn't a year is ever acceptable. One, yes, we've been conditioned for that. Even our best teams had that one slip up. Many times it became a rallying point for team to finish the season strong. It's what makes that second loss more egregious. Like hitting the damn snooze button on your wakeup call.
When the coach takes on a philosophy that he does not need elite players to win, and recruits accordingly, then when his teams play against elite recruits, he better win or be very competitive. That’s the issue as I see it.
We lost as two huge favorites against LSU and UK. Mullen needs to make up for it somewhere. Losing some games that you are supposed to win by a couple scores and then not winning any of the games that you are supposed to lose is not a good combination. If he doesn't balanced things out then it is pretty clear why he seats is getting warm.
Upsets happen. But good coaches will then balance it would by being over 500 on coin flip games, and winning some games they shouldn't.
Not one person on this board is advocating “extending Grantham”. You’re apparently in your own ‘universe’
Do you have a point, or are you really just musing on how interesting this observation might be from coach's peesorctive?
