Thought a student viewpoint would be interesting/JJH

It’s not unreasonable to think UF will become a basketball giant (Alligator Sports)

This men's basketball team has the potential to be the best Florida Gators basketball team outside of the 2006-07 back-to-back title-winning teams. Seriously. It actually is realistic.

Yes, the Gators lost two of their leading scorers in point guard Chris Chiozza and forward Egor Koulechov. But they have more than enough talent to fill in for the two.

White didn’t confirm if Nembhard would be in the starting lineup come November, as he’s in a battle with incumbent backup Mike Okauru. But it would be a huge surprise to me and just about every other UF basketball pundit out there if Nembhard isn’t on the floor for the first tip.

It’s not unreasonable to think UF will become a basketball giant

He lost me when he suggested Nembhard will be the next Rajon Rondo.

It's an even weirder statement than that. The "writer" says that the next best passer in the 2019 class is Rajon Rondo.

He's not saying that Nembhard will be the next Rajon Rondo (their games are not similar IMO) or that Rajon Rondo is in the 2019 class (he's clearly not and a basketball beat writer would know as much). He is using Rondo as a reference point in regard to passing to show Nembhard is a great passer in any class. The sophomore columnist obviously needs time to work on his craft.

Now that it's cleared up, I feel like there might be a just a tad bit of hyperbole involved here...

They have a ways to go to take the second best team mantle away from the 2014 gators that went undefeated in SEC play, beat Kentucky thrice, and went to the final four as a number 1 seed.

Optimism springs Eternal. Shoot, before the beginning of this year's football season, Kentucky fans thought the Cats could beat Florida and Mississippi State.

And also won the SEC tournament when they could've just coasted. I checked and it's never happened in the conference's history. It may take decades or centuries before that happens again much like our same starting 5 winning 2 national titles.

I check the student newspapers for the SEC schools most every day, our Alligator writers are as good or better than any of the rest, thought you all would enjoy the difference between them and Scott Carter and Chris Harry :)

Nothing wrong with being optimistic but it may be best to throw a dash of reality into those expectations. Let’s try to make it into the top 25 rankings before we dust off the shelf to make room for that championship trophy.

I guess he didn't benefit from the sophomore jump.

    Cinc - I loved that 2013 - 14 Gator squad.
So many accomplishments, unbeaten in SEC regular season and tourney play, 30 straight wins.

Broke my heart when they lost to UCONN, worst game they played all year.
As I recall Scotty was sick and perhaps some other guys as well.

Regrettably UK won 38 straight the next year and actually exceeded UF's record because SEC regular season games increased for 16 to 18 games.

I was delighted when Whiskey knocked UK out however!

Didn’t UK beat Wisconsin that year and lose to Ucom in the final? I think Wisconsin knocked them out the next year.

Gators won 18 SEC games that year, first time a team had gone undefeated in an 18 game SEC regular season. UK could only tie this accomplishment, Florida was the first to do it. By the way, 18 games used to be how many games were played in conference from years earlier so this isn't the first time the conference season went to 18 game format.

Scottie Lewis will be the barometer if this is true. If we can start attracting these 5 star talents away from Kentucky, it is not unreasonable to think we can compete with blue bloods for talent or eventually be considered a blue blood type program. If Lewis goes to UK, we might still win titles, but with top 100 talent rather than top 25 type talent

    Whoa.

If I was going to go all retro I would use guys like Magic Johnson and John Stockton as elite passers/assist point guards instead of Rondo..
