Lugo clean in the 4th....7 ks so far. Seems to be settling in

    Reynoso walk
    Hoover single
Adams grounder and Hoover erased on interference (sound familiar)
    Lindaman walk
    Echols fly to center
    Roberts grounds to pitcher
Roberts bad at plate so far. 2 on, no outs, bases loaded with one out and unproductive at bats in both cases

Good win, Nice to see Lugo settle after the bumpy first. Got outhit 5-4, as usual free bases were the difference. Similar to last couple of years

Lugo Deals in No. 7 Gators Opening Day Victory
TAMPA – The No.7-ranked Florida Gators earned a 4-1 opening day victory over Illinois State Friday night at the USF Softball Stadium. UF now holds a 23-1 record in season openers and a 32-5 record in games during the opening weekend.

Junior Natalie Lugo (1-0) reeled off 11 strikeouts in the effort – which is the fourth time of her career with 10 or more in a single game. Down 1-0 after the 1st inning, the Gators (1-0) used a four-run bottom of the 2nd rally to erase the early deficit that the Redbirds (1-2) had established.

Junior Jordan Matthews started the big inning with a leadoff single through the left side, while freshman Julia Cottrill drew a four-pitch walk and senior Jade Caraway ripped a line drive single to load the bases with no outs. The table was set for a RBI hit by pitch drawn by Hannah Adams to tie the game, which was followed up by Kendyl Lindaman's bases loaded walk.
Sophomore Charla Echols put the game out of reach with her two-RBI double to left field.

Gators best Redbirds in season opener
    Payton Titus, Alligator Sports Writer
For seven months, all of college softball’s eyes have been on the Gators. What would they do without an All-American in the circle? How could a winning program revamp its style of play and expect to contend at that same elite level as it did before?

In a radio interview before the first pitch was thrown, coach Tim Walton explained that opening night jitters creep up on players no matter who they’re set to face. After seven months of relentless background noise, the Gators would be playing against the Illinois State Redbirds and themselves.

But after tonight, Florida’s players can finally relax and focus on just playing ball. Leading up to the season opener, Walton made it clear that Florida would be taking a different approach this year. The focus would be on dynamic offensive play rather than pitching and strong defense.

However, in their 4-1 win Friday night, the Gators proved they could do both. Against a team that beat USF on Thursday and took Michigan down to the wire earlier today, UF had success on the mound and at bat. Despite seeming unsure as to who would succeed Kelly Barnhill on the mound for Florida, Walton stuck with starter Natalie Lugo for all seven innings.
