You forgot every one of the starting receivers opted out of that game AND our defense made every team we played look better than they were!

Early ranking can definitely influence the rest of a team's year and it's playoff chances. But OU dropped two early last year (including a 4-6 KSU) and under a Covid shortened season, really had no case as a top 4. But looking like world beaters in their bowl will definitely stick in the minds of pollsters throughout the upcoming season and may very well earn them some benefit of doubt.

They were good, but our defense made them look unstoppable (as they did most offenses in 2020).

I didn't forget. The OP asked if our performance in that game changed the perception of both teams. When Mullen mentioned all of the players missing, the media painted it as him making excuses. Our bad defense also gave LSU hope for next season as well.

We out played...err... talent-ed A&M and LSU, so... That was ALL on our coaching staff... Player/s need to sit if they sandbag... or just suck.

If we had beaten A&M and LSU, we would have been 10-2. Both games could have been won with one more good defensive play. Not just at the end of the game either. There were probably 10 places in the A&M game where the defense could have made the difference with one good play. It would be much easier for the coaching staff to recruit as a 10-2 team instead of an 8-4 team.

Oklahoma just killed us. That reminded me of playing Nebraska in 1995. Doesn't matter why they killed us.

Getting reminded by how totally wretched our defense was last year? Ugh.

To put this thread in perspective how many other fanbases can say the same, that had they only won two more key games their season would have been so different?

But that isn’t the OPs question.

Good point. Consider that 1 or 2 plays kept us from beating A&M and LSU, and apparently 1 or 2 more series of downs and we beat Bama in the SECCG......that’s what people are saying so think about that... we were that close to making the playoff undefeated .........

..... no team comes that close with a defense nearly as horrible as the same people are saying. So what is it? Can’t have it both ways. Maybe the ‘fire Grantham’ crowd ought to STFU and see what happens this season before bringing out the pitchforks and hangin ropes.

Trey Dean int, was the stop we needed, right up to the point he got blind sided and fumbled. Honestly though, how sick would everyone have been if we beat Bama and were left out of the playoff?

No way in hell would we have been left out of the playoff had we beaten Bama.

If that's the case, then the LSU game was meaningless in terms of season goals.
We were going to the SECCG, win or lose.
So if beating Bama meant we were in the playoff, but a loss to Bama meant we weren't, then the LSU game had no bearing.

I still wanted to win, and we still should have won, but if we were going to the playoffs anyway then that puts a whole different spin on things.

Players opted out left and right. For a team that was based on passing more than any year I can remember here, Trask had virtually no receiving targets at the bowl game. No Grimes, no Pitts, no Toney, no Copeland (COVID), if I recall. I think Rick Wells was the primary receiving weapon. Rick Wells. He was non-existant for his entire career before that. The team deserved to lose that game, and, they did soundly. But, we were definitely impacted by missing players in key areas. Agree that the D was bad, but, they were bad all year, not just that game. We had plenty of depth at receiver and that is the most impactful area that was missing against OU compared to our better-played games.

Who would we have replaced since we had 2 losses and everyone else had 1 or none? Clemson lost without Lawrence on the road, osu undefeated, ND who lost to Clemson in a rematch, Bama?
We lost to a below 500 team the week before. No other team had that bad a loss on their resume.

Yep, dont think we would have gotten in, which would have made the lsu loss even more frustrating . Aggies might have snuck in, but I would bet on Bama still backing in to the playoffs even with a loss.

Bama would have probably stayed the 1 seed and the talking heads would have said they didn't need the game.
