    They weren't rebuilding though.

Kirby inherited a stocked roster and the #1 QB recruit in the nation from Richt. Then the very next year the new #1 QB recruit was a a life long dawg fan right in uga's backyard. Now they have all the momentum and suddenly uga is the 'it' school.

Don't look into that too much. Alabama over signs every year and already has a team of mostly 5 stars. I would look at what they recruited. The 2 5 stars are both defense which Bama needs because of graduation and juniors leaving early. Of their remaining class, 17 players, 9 are defensive players of which 7 of them are 4 stars. So overall, 9 of their 19 commits are 4 and 5 star defensive players. Surprisingly, they didn't pick up a single RB, but look at what they already have at that position - Damien Harris, Najee Harris (5 star), Josh Jacobs (3 star), Brian Robinson Jr (4 star), and Ronnie Clark (4 star). Najee and Brian are freshmen and played this year so they will be elevated to starters along with Damien Harris and Jacobs. Yeah they could use one or 2 more but I think they will reload that position in next year's class.

Kirby is as clean as a port a potty...doesn't matter...all major programs are in this seedy business of college sports and if you don't do it you can't win championships.

High end College Sports is Corrupt to such a depth that it borders on the Incredible. It may possibly be worse than Czarist Russia in the late 19th Century which is likely the most corrupt environment throughout written historical records.

You can still be good and avoid incredible corruption, but those at the top are almost always benefiting from it.

As you noted rick, it was just Too Quick and Too Massive. And Smart doesn't have Harbaugh's charisma, by any stretch of the imagination.

While certainly I wish we signed more 5-stars, I wonder if UGA will have problems managing all these egos.
5-star recruits are a different breed.
While all SEC signees see the NFL as a possibility, 5-stars come in already counting the NFL dough.
When things don't go exactly as planned, the locker room can get toxic as the players get unhappy.

So IMO too many 5-stars can be a problem. It's possible this blows up as it did for us under Meyer.

(Yes, part of this is jealousy, but part of it is experience with this kind of ego/ entitlement.)

So I'm not conceding anything to UGA.
I like our coaches and I really like next year's schedule which should help our recruiting next year.

    We'll be fine.

One other perspective that all of this recruiting success now brings... pressure.

Due respect to Georgia, but anything less than a National Championship within the next 2/3 years with all that talent will be an abject failure by my estimation.

    I hope Kirby is ready!

    Not really.
I remember well how many of Urban Meyer's 5 stars went bust.

Just to refresh- between 2009 and 2010 we signed NINE 5-stars...
    Matt Elam
    Dominque Easley
    Shariff Floyd
    Ronald Powell
    Josh Shaw
    Jelani Jenkins
    Gary Brown
    Andre Debose
    Xavier Nixon

So out of all these 5-stars we had a nice run in 12 but no championships.
    That's it.
The 09s didn't help much in our SEC East title that year.

But the locker room turned into a complete mess in 2010, and chaos ensued.

So yeah- it can be a problem.

I wish we got a few of them, but too many 5-stars can be a potential problem unless you have a Saban type personality at the top.

It remains to be seen if Smart can handle this. Perhaps he can. I'm just saying it's not as simple as it sounds.

And championships are not automatic. As our experience shows.

Only Bama has won more than once. Clemson and Ohio State have only won once under Urban and Dabo. College football is filled with coaches and programs that have won one National Title.

    On UGa,

"Why is it that during recruiting season they sign all the great players, but when it comes time to play the game, we have all the great players? I don't understand that. What happens to them?"

It’s not just the big programs.. We are paying Travaris Robinson 1.2 million. It’s starting to become the norm for college football programs.. Who woulda thunk it?

The talent gap between us and UGA right now is as bad as last years score indicated and that’s scary

Direct reflection of Macs lack of recruiting prowess and KS cleaned up

Uga definitely has bagmen as I know one personally as I live in atlanta. He isn’t at my club but at another one in atlanta (cap city). They exist for sure.

I am sure all teams competing or trying to compete has them.

Now directly related to the original poster. This situation is an outlier event that I don’t believe will happen again. GA hit the superfecta plain and simple.
    1) richt left him with a bunch of nfl players that were all 3rd, 4th, and 5th year players. Look it up GA was the most experienced team by far this year.
    2) richt left him with the top qb in the country and a very good start to his transition year.
    3) I know straight from a big dog booster (has a sky box) that the 3 biggest football boosters had a sit down with mcgarity and told him to give smart everything he asks for or the money will stop flowing.
    4) the top qb recruit in country and most ready to play happened to grow up in GA as a life long dog fan (Fromm).
    5) this year they luck into again the top qb in country is from Marietta GA (fields)
    6) AL has huge turnover in coaching staff the last two years (more so than normal)
    7) Malzahn was on hot seat last year through like game 8 this year (GA competes against them for recruits)
    8) to top it all off and why I say they hit the superfecta is the 3 other biggest competitors for recruits (besides AL and Aub mentioned above) are FL (we border the southern part of their state) and FSU (they border the SW of GA), and TN (northern border) —-All three schools went through coaching changes not within years of each other but all at the same exact time. That last thing will never in any of our lifetimes ever happen again.

We just signed a really solid transition class. We have a lot of 4 stars and those 4 stars with a chip can play with any 5 stars.

Very important FL/GA game this year IMO.
