While it may have been sometimes painful to watch, Mullen/Meyer did win a national championship with Leak at QB. However, I do understand and agree with the premise of your post. IMHO Kirby looked at at LSU's success and realized he has to change to win a NC and is revamping his offense. We will see if he turns out to be the next Coach O or devolves into another Muschamp.

I agree that what a conservative minded defensive coach like Smart wants is to effectively win with defense. And I agree a big part of that is having an offense that controls the clock and shortens the game. But I think the problem for UGA is that while they're good statistically, their players (on both sides of the ball) tend to not show up for some games. That's coaching, not scheme.

I would actually argue that schools like Bama and Clemson have evolved their game to a somewhat more balanced offense in the mold of UGA and that's a big part of their success.

Programs have to constantly adapt to changing rules. UGA had depth issues at QB and TE and took advantage of grad transfer rules to bring in experienced starting talent from other P5 programs.

    Perhaps.....but...

The way Mullen's going, Georgia should be more worried about the Gators.. :)

QC analysts getting $150k now, wowzer! Big coin for Monken too. If these high $$ coordinators that bounce around from gig to gig are so good, why don’t they ever stay anywhere long? Monken has tried desperately to land another HC job at any level and doesn’t even get much of a sniff, wonder why?

Georgia: New offensive coordinator Todd Monken will make $1.1 million in 2020 while quality control analyst Buster Faulkner will earn $150,000, 247reports. At Southern Miss, Monken made $700,000 as head coach.

In my opinion...UGA loses to UF this year if Cager did not transfer there.

Faulkner was making $250k at Sothern Miss last year. His number will likely go up as he is expected to slide into the QB coach role when Coley ultimately leaves.

Monken will be an improvement over Coley. Of course my mother would be an improvement over Coley.

Yes, but Gators would not have been close without their transfers. It’s part of the game, now.

I think we said the same thing word-for-word when Muschamp would hire a new OC.

Muschamp used to hire different guys to run the same offense. There is hope, based on who Kirby hired and the things he was saying publicly at the end of the season, that the offense will be different here stylistically next season, but obviously we won't know for sure until we actually see it.
