It started out with 48 of the best plays in Gator History. Through a series of 46 polls we have eliminated all of the plays except two. The plays were divided into offensive and defensive plays and there were some special teams plays used to even out the two sides. The Final Four round had the largest vote totals so far as well. So here they are! The top offensive play is the play immortalized by the phrase "Green is behind the defense." Doug Johnson to Quezzie Green in the 97 FSU game. Gators trailed with a little over two minutes to go. SOS had been rotating QB's all game until this drive. The video is in the following posts. The top defensive play was a special teams play. It is forever known as the "Cock Block". Florida was leading the SOS lead Gamecocks of South Carolina and with just seconds left in the game as Ryan Succup lined up for a USC field goal. Jarvis Moss with his incredible leaping ability and long wingspan manages to get his "ring finger, the finger that one day might have a championship ring on it" it the words of Gary Danielson, managed to block it. It is in a video in the following posts as well. These two plays are also often mentioned in connection with the loudest moments in The Swamp. Cast your vote for the Greatest Gator Play. Voting will stay open until Tuesday Morning at 8 am edt on April 26th.
love both those plays Green is behind the defense stopped half assed u from winning a NC The CockBlock propelled us on to win a NC tough choice but I went with the cock block
Sorry, that play lost out in the voting to the Ike Hilliard stop and pop against FSU in the 96 Championship game.
I know at the time that SOS probably hated that play, but I wonder if he looks back on that play with some sort of happiness in knowing that allowed us to go on to play in the NC game and destroy the Bucknutz.
It was hard to choose....they are both fantastic. In the end I decided anytime you can beat Clown-U and ruin their NC hopes......it's hard to really beat something like that!
Thanks for the memory, ccoralgator. I took my Dad (UF '43) to that game and it seemed like we hugged and celebrated for about 2 minutes straight after the 2pt conversion. Six months later he was gone; but, I'll never forget how happy we were that day.
Voted for the Cock Block between the above two. I still contend that the single best play in UF Football history is the 4th and 11 conversion for a TD (Danny W. to Anthony) in the rain at Knoxville in 96.
Yeah, even getting to this point there has to be a lot of emotional factors that steer people to pick one over another. This has been a fun endeavor. In the end, these are two of the most crowd capturing plays in SWAMP history. I went with the cock block. I said I wasn't going to think about it, just go with my gut on picking my first reaction between the two plays...that was it. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
For the realistic crowd noise, not being filtered by television, I have always liked this video. Love the crowd dies down just a bit when the kick is made, but then explodes on the block.
Yup, I know. I was devastated to see it go down. I've been participating in this. Merely voicing my opinion to Gator Nation
They once asked HOF baseball pitcher Dizzy Dean if he was the best of all time. He said he didn't know if he as the best, but was he was amongst them! Same applies here!
