I know that's there has been a trend of less-sexy hires, but results beyond expectations, ever since Mullen took over. I really hope that continues

But at some point, this approach will bite us

Mullen has shown his plenty over the last month or so for all of us. What a disappointing hire.

  3. Yeah if we made this hire in 2012 it would've been a good hire. Unfortunately it's 2021 and nothing Mcgee has done since then makes this seem like good news. He's not a dynamic recruiter or he would've had much better opportunities in the last 7 or so years.

Disappointed with this and most of the new coach hires. I think we upgraded from English. I think we got same talent in replacing Gray but remains to be seen on the recruiting side. Big step down from Johnson to McGee in coaching and recruiting. Johnson was our main recruiter in Miami.

plus, to top it off, we kept Grantham.

it is almost like Mullen is trolling the most vocal segment of gator nation...

    Ash? Took a better gig.
    TRob? Psyche!
Lose our best recruiter so maybe hire a big splash? Ha ha Promote an analyst no program wanted as a coach.

fire the DC that ruined the season and led the worst defense in program history? Suck it gator fans he’s staying!

all these make me lean that Dan has one foot out the door already. Almost zero effort to improve the team this off season via coaching changes and in fact I think we got worse.

Something is going on behind the scenes. This is just my gut talking but as soon as that NFL offer comes he is gone. This off-season just does not add up.

Florida: Source tells FootballScoop Dan Mullen plans to promote Garrick McGee from analyst to quarterbacks coach.

    Missouri (analyst)
    2019 Missouri (WR)
    2020–present Florida (Analyst)

He hasn’t been a QB coach since 2017, at Illinois.
2 of the last 3 years he’s only been an analyst, not a real assistant.

UF is easily a top 5 QB coach job. This was definitely not a top-shelf hire, far from it, imho. Massive drop off from Brian Johnson.

Being Mullen's OC would be like being Spurrier's or Lincoln Riley's. It's a title with very limited responsibility. I'd imagine it's one of the reasons Johnson left and not something Herman is going to step in to.

I think he probably anticipated this might be a possibility when he hired him as an analyst last year. Mullen must have liked what he saw, so from a coaching standpoint, it's good enough for me.

wish we'd put more obvious focus on recruiting.

From what I read in so many words..... McGee may be a defensive analyst & QB coach. He will be analyst under grantham to game plan opposing offenses since he is offensive minded.

Tom Herman would not have been a good fit and based on what I was told by someone who’s son Herman was recruiting that Herman is a jerk

That would be a reasonable allocation of resources.

Tom Herman? lol. While this job technically has an OC title I wouldn't expect anyone particularly "splashy." That said, a young recruiter in the mold of Brian Johnson would have been expected. This seems like more of a retread but we'll see how it turns out...

Florida is one of the best jobs in the nation. Florida’s offense under Dan Mullen was elite last year and he always produces a good to great offense. Our most recent QB coach and offensive coordinator was just hired to the NFL and was a good to great recruiter.

the QB coach at UF should be an easy sell to an up and coming hot shot QB coach. A dog on the recruiting tale.

instead Dan promotes an internal defensive quality assistant (that is what he was announced as when originally hired) to coach QBs. No history of elite recruiting. No history in dade where Johnson was the primary recruiter for Marshall and Collins.

this reeks of a lazy hire. I already commented once on this thread how this hire does not improve us to where we were with johnson and has no long term upside where he could reach and exceed Johnson’s contribution but the more I think on this hire the more it disappoints me.

This is a Greg Nord level hire based on the opportunities/potential we could have potentially gone with.

man do we lose the off season every year under Mullen.

Sometimes the safe hire is the best hire. Bring in the sexy hire and he doesn’t gel with the staff and you’re screwed.
