Yesterday, the Gators offered full athletic scholarship to 8th grade quarterback Sabby Meassick from Foundation Academy in Orlando.
(see link: Florida Gators offer 8th-grade quarterback Sabby Meassick of Foundation Academy - Orlando Sentinel)

Last month the Gators offered a full athletic scholarship to eighth-grade quarterback Julian Lewis from Carrollton, Georgia.

Does it seem awfully early to give offers to 13/14 year old boys who are still only playing Pop Warner, or tournament teams? These kids have never played High School varsity football!

Is this new, or have the Gators offered 8th graders in past years?

I'm not a recruiting buff, so just seeking feedback.

Do the top recruiters like Nick Saban and Kirby Smart offer scholarships to kids this young too?

In my opinion, I think the gators could pick up a lot more sure things from the transfer portal versus versus offering middle school kids.

Zero risk move. Kids are working through QB camps at younger ages, so there is some skill-set data on them already. They'll pan out or they won't, and get committable scholly offer down the road (or won't). Really not much here of substance, just taking a flier on a possible small edge in the future.

Sign them kids up for NIL deals too while we at it. Never mind you can’t sign a binding contract as a minor.

What if the kid turns out to be only a 1 star or 2 star recruit as an 11th grader? Does the coach then rescind the offer?

They aren't committable offers right now, but essentially...yes.

Happens all the time in recruiting. Usually with a bit of finesse, but not always. I imagine they have enough info on the kids now that 1-2 star is pretty unlikely, but the 'offers' are contingent on certain progress, either explicit or implicit.

Didn’t Chris Leak get a scholarship offer from NC State or somewhere like that in the 8th grade? Yet he came to UF (and glad he did). There’s no guarantees.

Lewis and his family have already visited UF. First offer is meaningful. Always remember. Very impressionable in middle school

right and believe it was WF since his brother CJ Leak went there. These kids never go to where they get their first offer from when they’re in middle school

Speaking of which…Miami offered Max Johnson (our opponent this week) and Harrison Bailey as 8th graders. I think Tate Martell committed to Washington in 8th grade.

I first remember this when Alabama offered Dylan Moses in the 8th grade. He eventually signed with them. I guess it's more of a thing than people realize.

I remember David Sills was in 7th grade when he verbally committed to USC when Kiffin was HC. He actually ended up at WVU and switched to WR and was Will Grier’s #1 WR. On the Giants practice squad now but he was a BALLER in college. His journey and story was incredible

From 7th-grade phenom to failed QB to elite receiver

I read an article about him not long back. Said the "Lebron James" of football is finally about to hit the pros. Lol It was a good read.

Maybe we should just go the European Soccer route and have youth teams. You know, sign them at 7yo (like Beckham, etc.) and just develop them through the youth system.

    I joke. . . but not really.
