Gators No. 3 on NACGC Preseason Poll

The 2019 season promises to be challenging as the Gators face half of the teams ranked in the preseason top six and five top-10 teams.

    Mary Howard UF Athletics

The top five 2019 preseason poll positions mirror the 2018 NCAA Super Six team final results – No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Louisiana State and No. 5 Utah.

The first eight Florida opponents rank among the preseason top 20, including home dates versus No. 7 Georgia (Feb. 22), No. 10 Kentucky (Jan. 25) and No. 14 Auburn (Feb. 8). The Gators face half of the top six preseason teams on the road – No. 2 Oklahoma (Feb. 1), No. 4 LSU (Jan. 18) and No. 6 Alabama (Feb. 15). Other preseason ranked Gator opponents include at No. 12 Arkansas (March 1) and the 2019 season opens Jan. 11 with a home meet versus No. 19 Missouri.

Joining the Gators are six freshmen, including current U.S. Senior National Team member Trinity Thomas. Leah Clapper and Sydney Johnson-Scharpf also competed at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships, with Johnson-Scharpf earning a spot on 2015-16 U.S. Senior National Team. Nya Reed, Savannah Schoenherr and Halley Taylor all competed at the Junior Olympic Level 10 National Championships. Schoenherr finished her J.O. career by winning the 2018 J.O. uneven bars title.

Any reason why we have only 9 meets this year? The season kicks off January 4th but our 1st meet is the following weekend. We’ve had 10+ meets and SECs since I can remember. I know it’s a long season and a toll on the bodies but it would seem beneficial to have more meets in order to build up RQS? At least the normal 10? Maybe we don’t have as much depth this year?
