I know I'm in the minority, but I've always felt Hickey would be back in 2022. He's projected right now as a 4th or 5th round pick. Not a lot of bonus money at that level. If he comes back for another season and solidifies himself at a position, then continues his hitting, he'll raise his draft status considerably, IMO. Plus, maybe the kid just wants to enjoy another year of college ball before entering the world of business as baseball.

Slot for the 4th round is still $500K+. It isn’t chump change. Of course you have taxes and agent fees too.

According to MLB.com signing bonus money for the 1st pick of the 4th round is $571,400, the last pick of the 5th round is $318,200. MLB. com has him at #142, which has a signing bonus slot of $386, 600. Prospectslive.com has him slotted at pick #59, which is in the 2nd round and has a bonus slot of $1,185,500. That's the only draft projection I've seen where Hickey is picked higher than the 4th or 5th round. That's not chump change, but that kind of money doesn't go very far in 2021 and he has to decide whether it's worth foregoing a college degree for the time being and taking a chance on getting to the big leagues (where only 2% of college athletes every make it to the pros) or whether he could improve his stock, plus get his degree from UF, by staying at Florida for 1 more year. Only the young man can decide what's best for himself. Here's a link to the draft pick values: Here are '21 Draft bonus pools, pick values

Agree, there are many decisions of the financial nature to be made that most folks don’t think about or realize.

The $1,185,500 signing bonus qualifies to be taxed under the luxury tax and that is 39% (of gross)—the normal agent fees are 10%. At square one you’re down to 51% of your signing bonus….Or at least that’s the numbers that were given to us back when Alan was drafted out of HS in the first round by Cleveland on 1.6 mil.

I would have liked to see Sterlin Thompson in the Cape Cod league swinging a wooden bat so that he gets reps with them. He has such a nice swing I suspect he will get paid to play eventually.

With Sully now announced as the USA CNT pitching coach that should be a big help to Barco and Sproat for next year.

    Maybe.

Sully was a catcher and he is a master on handling pitchers, but Sproat has an electric fastball and a decent change but needs a third pitch. I don't know if Sully is the guy that can teach him that. Sproat with a back foot slider would be awesome.

Hey, Sully has done some great things. For example Brady Singer in his freshman year had an enormous amount of armside motion on his two seamer, but the next year he didn't throw as hard and had sink on his two seamer and was way more effective.

That was a tweak, but Sproat needs to know a new pitch.

We agree on Sproat but Sully has created a large number of Top 5 round guys and pros. Just since his arrival, Maronde and Paco made the show. Disco. Poyner. Maddox. Anderson. Johnson. Singer. Kowar. Dunning. Puk.

That is 11 that I can name without working too hard. I am sure I am missing one or two. Some of the above didn’t last too long, granted. Injuries being a key part of that.

The guy maybe was a catcher but his track record with anyone not on the 2019-2021 team is incredible. Either he has lost his touch or something just wasn’t right with the group. Give him a bit more non-COVID time with Sproat and let’s see what happens.

I am just saying that he is great a tweaking pitches they already have. I am not sure that he can teach a pitch that they don't have the basics of. We will see.

And Sproat is an amazing talent.
