Interesting candidate. Recruiting coordinator duties might suggest he is skilled in that area. 3 years studying under Kirby at Bama and UGA. Not sure how I feel about this one. Was expecting a HR hire and feels like a single’s hitter instead. However, was initially skeptical of Coach Turner and he quickly changed my opinion of him. Secondary can’t be any worse than last year. Who is CBs and who is Safety Coach?

I like this hire, young and well thought of from everything I have heard. Might not be a big name, but all the big names started off as unknowns as well.

We do a really good job of not moving the needle with our coaching hires. Brew was the anomaly.

No disrespect to Montinar, who I hope knocks it out of the park here, but it kind of feels like we're just shuffling through some basically interchangeable DB coaches in the hope that we stumble on something that works.

All he needs to know is how to hand the recruits the key chain...learned that from Kirby real well Im sure.

So he's from Naples originally and played football for Bill Kramer, who before he retired ran a quality program at Naples HS. I see he played and got his start at coaching at Eastern Kentucky, before moving on to Purdue. I want to say the reason he went there, was because at the time Danny Hope was the HBC there, Danny hope was also a Eastern Kentucky alumni......(Danny got his start with coaching at Manatee HS as a OL coach there). Danny was fired by Purdue after the 2011 season and is the reason Montinar spent just the one season at Purdue before moving onto Alabama. Alabama won a national championship in 2012 and led the nation in total defense, 2013 Alabama did not win the SEC, finished 11-2 as well as finishing with the a top 10 defense. At JMU his 1st year there the HBC was fired at the end of the season, but Montinar was retained with the new staff which saw JMU finish the season 9-4 making the FCS playoffs that 2nd season. Montinar’s JMU cornerbacks broke up 59 passes, collected 14 interceptions (returning six of them for touchdowns) and forced and recovered eight fumbles in 2015, collecting 22 turnovers and scoring seven touchdowns in all. The Dukes’ corners led the FCS with four pick-sixes in 2014. Montinar helped produce all-conference cornerback Taylor Reynolds, who earned first-team honors in 2015 and second-team in 2014.

I like that fact that he's from Florida originally, and has a working knowledge of the state in particular the southern portion of the state. I have no issues with his resume, and feel he's a coaching talent that hasproved his worth while coming through the ranks and while not necessarily a well known coach a talent never the less ready to take the next step up!

Getting plucked from Perdue of all places after only 1 year by an employer that’s as astute at hiring as Saban is is def a feather in his cap.

2017 Sunbelt recruiting coach of the year. He has deep Florida ties and apparently can recruit. He is also known as an excellent special teams coach.

Sounding like a solid hire. Here’s to hoping he knocks it out of the park.

I had heard a hire was coming but did not have a name. I think it is a solid hire. Jules is thought to be a good recruiter, time will tell. Not the home run hire some wanted but not sure there was a guy that would please everyone.

Exactly. I don’t think there are home run assistant coaches hires. He has Florida ties and is probably qualified. A great baseball team has a bunch of guys that hit singles and doubles. The big thing is that he can coach HS players to be full on productive College players. If he can do that, great.

One advantage over a "home run" hire is he may be more likely to hang around for a while instead of jumping ship after a year. Continuity is good (as long as he produces a quility product, that is).

Without English around would Mullen stay away from the players from the west coast?

Never heard of the guy, but resume looks good. His youth combined with
McGriffs experience could be a good combo. A positive relationship with Fla HS coaches is always a plus.
