Women's basketball battles in-state foe and nationally-ranked Florida State Tuesday night at the O'Connell Center
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Meeting for the 76th time, the University of Florida women's basketball team and the No. 12 Florida State Seminoles square off Tuesday, Nov. 26 in the Sunshine Showdown at Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. ET as the Gators play their fifth game of a stretch of six-straight home contests.

Tuesday's game features several exciting promotions including free "Beat FSU" shirts for the first 100 fans, free slices of apple pie for the first 100 fans and a special Thanksgiving food drive initiative in which fans can receive free admission to a December home game of their choice (Dec. 1 vs. FAMU, Dec. 17 vs. Mercer or Dec. 29 vs. Davidson) by donating two non-perishable food items. In addition, sophomore guard Ariel Johnson will be celebrated as part of her Player Day.
The Gators (4-1) return to the hardwood after hosting another nationally-ranked squad in Indiana this past Friday. UF slowed the high-octane Indiana offense down, limiting it to a season low in points scored but couldn't get past the veteran-laden Hoosier unit, falling 73-49. Redshirt-junior Kiki Smith, who tied a career high with 18 points, and sophomore Ari Johnson paced UF as it dropped its first matchup of the young season.
Through their first five matchups, UF has five players averaging eight or more points led by Smith (14.4 points per game). Paired with their versatile offense, the Gators' defense has been stout as they have limited three opponents to less than 30 percent shooting three times already this season. A season ago, UF accomplished this feat just twice.

    Noles Battle Gators on Tuesday
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – The Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown returns on Tuesday as No. 12 Florida State Women’s Basketball travels to face Florida at 6 p.m. at Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in Gainesville. The matchup airs on the SEC Network+.

Florida State has owned the rivalry as of late, winning six of the last seven meetings, eight of the last 10 since 2009 and 12 of the last 16 since 2004. Carrying a very young roster last year, FSU was able to grind out a 63-56 win over Florida in Tallahassee.

Florida State is seeking its second road win this season against a Southeastern Conference opponent. On Nov. 9, the Seminoles (5-0) picked up a 70-62 victory at LSU behind senior point guard Nicki Ekhomu’s 21 points and freshman sharp-shooter Sammie Puisis’ 16 points off the bench (4-of-4 from beyond the arc).

Tuesday’s rivalry matchup will be FSU head coach Sue Semrau’s 25th against the Gators (4-1). Semrau took over the Seminoles facing a major rebuild in 1997 and lost her first eight games vs. UF. Since then, she has gone 12-4 against the Gators and has worked her way toward a 12-12 all-time record against them.

Gators WBK had a solid practice Monday getting ready for the showdown with the Noles tonight. Kids seem ready to get a W. Staff ramped it up and the players responded well. Practiced hard on offense and defense getting ready for a tough FSU squad. Ball handling and defending is improving week to week, a few fans at the practice in the O'Dome several appear to parents probably here for the Thanksgiving weekend ahead. Had a good chat with Sam Stolte the man responsible for WBK previews, recaps, posts and tweets talking about how much the players have improved and how well the frosh have adjusted from HS level ball to where they are now.
Going to take ever player's best effort tonight but this group doesn't back down from a challenge... Go Gators!!

Curious to see what Cam does here.... we actually could play bigger but I just have little faith in our post game.... still hoping we can develop it though. Emer and Paige would have a nice height advantage over FSU. I'd probably start Emer just to see if we can take advantage of the size but with a quick trigger. If Lavender doesn't play its much harder for us to go with a 4 guard lineup for most of the game. The good news is FSU is not a deep team either. They have to be the favorite but this is a winnable game if the girls can put a complete one together. If Lavender plays and Emer steps up I think we win.... otherwise I'd pick the Noles. We simply have to get healthy sooner rather than late . We only have 11 players with Rainey out for the season.... throw in the loss of Manu and Lavender and Cam is going to have to work some magic for a little bit. The one benefit though is we may develop some depth a little faster.

Noles pulling away in the end. Solid effort but I do question the rotation a bit. Thought we'd see Emer a good bit in this one since she has 3 inches on FSU's tallest player. Team is about what we thought. Capable of winning a game we aren't suppose to if hot from 3 but otherwise around .500. If we just had some decent post play...:(.

Needed funda’s 21 points from last year!

Won 2 of the 4 quarters - not a bad showing. Good adjust after that lousy 1st quarter. Needed to close out the game better . Got within 2 a couple of times, tied it even, too. (If only we could have hit some of those open looks,....)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Squaring off against its second-straight AP Top 25 opponent, the University of Florida women's basketball team took No. 12 Florida State to the wire, but ultimately dropped a hard-fought 66-55 decision Tuesday evening at Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.

Florida fought back from a 13-point first half deficit and trailed just 46-44 heading into the fourth quarter, but saw the Seminoles pull away late in the 76th all-time meeting between the in-state foes.
Redshirt-junior guard Kiki Smith, finishing with 10 or more points for the fourth time this season, led the way with 14 tallies and five rebounds. Zada Williams contributed 12 points and 11 boards as the Florida native collected her second career double-double and her first since her Gator debut last season.

Florida's defense which has been stout to open the 2019-20 campaign, held the Seminoles to 15 points fewer than their season average. In addition to its strong defensive effort, UF valued possessions on the other end, registering just eight turnovers.
Scoring in double-figures for the fourth-straight game for the first time in her career, Ari Johnson added 12 points and seven rebounds while freshman standout Lavender Briggs, returning to the starting lineup, recorded 10 points.

After Florida outscored FSU in both the second and third quarters to make it a one possession game with just the fourth quarter remaining, FSU surged ahead with a 5-0 run to open the final period. Kristina Moore converted an old-fashioned three-point play to draw Florida within seven points at 58-51 at the 5:02 mark, but the Seminoles then utilized an 8-1 run to carry a double-digit lead late in the game.

Noles Win Fourth Straight Over Gators
Kiah Gillespie's 17 points and 18 rebounds help Florida State to a 66-55 win in Gainesville
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Kiah Gillespie scored 17 points and matched her career high with 18 rebounds and No. 12 Florida State turned back rival Florida 66-55 on Tuesday night.
Nicki Ekhomu added 15 points and Valencia Myers 10 for the Seminoles, who secured the game with a late 8-0 run. Gillespie has 16 double-doubles in her two years with FSU, three this season.

Leading 58-52 with less than three minutes to play, Gillespie hit a jumper. Ekhomu followed with two baskets before Nausia Woolfolk’s layup with 25 seconds to play put the Seminoles on top 66-52. The Gators missed six straight shots and had a turnover before a late 3-pointer closed it out.
Ekhomu and Woolfolk are the first seniors to go undefeated in the rivalry. The Seminoles (6-0) have won 7 of the last eight. Coach Sue Semrau, after losing her first eight in the series, now has a 13-12 record against the Gators.

Florida (4-2) never led and trailed by as many as 11 in the first half but entered the fourth quarter only down two, 46-44. Gillespie hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to open the fourth quarter and the Gators never recovered.
