Kubicz claims singles Flight C Championship at FSU
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Florida women's tennis team ended its 2018 fall campaign on a high note, registering a perfect 3-0 mark in singles play during the final day of competition Sunday afternoon at the Seminole All-Conference Showdown played at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Courts on the Campus of Florida State University.

All three Gator entries, Katie Kubicz, Marlee Zein and Tsveta Dimitrova recorded match victories in their action on the singles court. The most notable of the victories was Kubicz' who knocked off McNeese State's Charoline Erlandsson to claim the singles Flight C title. Kubicz, the junior, finished with an unblemished 3-0 record for the tournament by concluding her weekend of competition with a 6-4, 6-2 win on Sunday.

Zein and Dimitrova, both in their first seasons with the Gators, recorded wins in their consolation matchups to secure third place finishes in their respective brackets. Zein, taking on Anna Markasova of Wisconsin, cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set but was met with some resistance in set two as she fought for a 7-5 victory. Dimitrova made quick work of West Virginia's Christina Jordan, earning a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Roster management has been confusing to say the least. I saw Coach T at the UF-UK game and told him jokingly to please not go into another season with 6 players. He cracked up and pointed at a couple of recruits he was hosting and said "that's why these young ladies are for". So hopefully there is some help in January. The roster as it stands now will likely struggle to stay in the 8-16 range with little chance of playing with the big dogs. Hard to imagine back to back years of not making it to nationals (final 16).

The linked article discusses the American Blue Chips left for 2019. Alana Wolfberg lists Florida as one of the schools that she is considering. She lives in Orlando. Trains with her father. Great athlete. I don't know if she will graduate high school in December though.

She would be a player like Emma or Kessler last year, would be a nice addition. But have not heard anything about her forgoing her senior year.Doesn't mean she wouldn't, just haven't seen anything

Alana Wolfberg chose Oklahoma State over Florida and other schools.

Seems we got a Russian, Anastasia Kharitonova, though the Gatorzone link is broken ATM...

Ranked as high as #18 in the junior world rankings, so probably a good add...

And I think she arrives in January, and an elite doubles competitor. What the doctor ordered

Saw that, odd choice going there....not sure how much of a fit she was for UF with no roster seniors this year and adding Nastya Kharatinova

Definitely what the doctor ordered as long as she shows up on campus. She has an 11.37 singles ranking on UTR which would put her at #4 in the lineup based on the current players' UTR's. Comparing UTR's for college players with UTR's for junior players is not an exact science though.

Think right now we have a roster full of very good "middle of the ladder" players.....gonna have to make a living winning at 3-4-5 because I don't think we will match up well vs elite teams at 1 and 2. But this addition puts us in the game, not sure were could be in that top 8 type conversation before this addition

We might need to learn some Russian...!
How do you say “Good Shot” in Russian?
    Or, “Go Gators”?

Added another international player expected to arrive in January...Sydney Berlin from Sweden. That puts the roster back at a good number and allows coach to rest people and play some matchups.

Looks like she will compete for playing time at #5 or #6. Her current UTR rating is 10.94 so she is comparable to Dimitrov who is currently rated a 10.89. Last year's #6 Katie Kubicz's current UTR rating is 10.29.

Yeah, unless her game has progressed somewhat. Still young, but for now I don't think Katie can hang when we have matches vs elite teams.
