Since no one reported on the UF St. Leo game, I took it upon myself to head on over to UNF Friday night and see what the Gator ladies softball team looked like. I’m going to break it up into several shorter posts since I’m a slow typer and afraid the server might go down again. First the starting lineup and defense.

    Amanda Lorenz 1B
    Hannah Adams 2B
    Danielle Romanello Sub Catcher
    Jamie Hoover RF
    Jordan Mathews DH
    Jordan Roberts starting Catcher
    Sophia Reynoso SS
    Hannah Sipos 3B
    Jade Carraway LF

I left out Alex Voss who played CF. The big surprise of the practice to me was Hannah Sipos who started at third base. This true freshman young lady already looks like a veteran at third base. She is similar to Reynoso in build but a little taller and just as smooth a fielder. Three plays really jumped out at me. First, with a runner at first, UNF hit a hard ground ball to Sipos down the third base line. Hannah grabbed it near the 3rd base bag turned and fired a strike over to second base leading Adams to the bag and Adams was able to complete the DP at first. It was smooth and effortless looking. An inning or so later, a UNF batter topped a slow grounder to Hannah. She came racing in, barehanded the ball and made a nice throw getting the runner by a stride at first. And last, with runners at first and second UNF topped another grounder to Hannah coming in slightly at third, she fielded the ball and backhanded it to Reynoso who was covering third! Three outstanding plays. She also has a real smooth throwing arm to first. Every throw was the same, about head high to the first baseman. No high throws no throws in the dirt.

I was also interested to see Jade Carraway. Well, Jade is listed at 5’10” but because she is rather thin compared to some of our bigger girls, she looks like she is about 6’2”! Looks more like a volleyball player with her long thin legs. She’s a power slapper and really strides out in front of the box. Interested to see how that plays out. Wasn’t overly impressed with her in LF as she let one line drive get past her down the line to the fence and then had a Texas Leaguer fly drop in front of her. Both tough plays, but as her reputation as a defensive specialist precedes her, I expected a little more. She can really fly down to first base and is a long strider. Coach Walton subbed her back in the game late just to see her steal second base and she can really run. Made it look easy.

Katie Chronister pitched the first three innings and looked good although she was hit hard in the third inning giving up 2 runs. My only complaint about Katie is that it looked like her pitches were all coming in about the same height, about knee high. I was sitting on the first base side about 25 feet from home plate so I had a good angle viewing home plate. Natalie Lugo pitched the next three innings and was nearly unhittable, striking out the side in the fourth. Lugo really moved her pitches up and down the ladder, knee high, waist high and chest high and really had UNF guessing. Noticeable difference between Katie and Natalie. The freshmen pitchers each got two innings a piece. Farley and then Hightower. Both girls pitched well but had some control issues. Think the nerves got to them a bit. Hightower has a quirky start to her delivery as she cocks her head quickly to the left and then goes into the windup. Never seen that before, but if it works, more power to her! One other thing, with the final at bat of the game coming up in the 10 inning game, Coach Walton called timeout and pulled Hightower and put Lugo back in. Then he called a huddle on the mound and after a teaching moment, Lugo got the final out on a ground out to third. Not sure the significance of that, maybe someone else at the game knows.

This football game is driving me nuts, but before I forget, Cheyenne Lindsay was in a knee brace from thigh to ankle to keep her leg from moving. Wondered where she was. Never saw her until after the game when they came out to shake hands and she limped out onto the field. Hope it’s not a season ender, have no idea.

I’ll try to finish this up later but can’t concentrate with this crazy football game. Let me just mention that Reynoso hit a couple hard shot line drives. She looked really good at the plate. And the star of the game as usual was, wait for it...... who else, Amanda Lorenz! She stroked an opposite field single first at bat and followed that up with a laser beam line drive double over the first-basemen’s head and then hit a monster homerun to dead center. Looked like the homerun hit the scoreboard about twenty feet behind the CF fence.

A couple other quick notes. Danielle Romanello looked very comfortable at the plate. I’m thinking she has a breakout year at the plate. She batted third and really took some monster cuts at the ball making good contact. Hit a bunch of really hard foul balls so she was real close, nothing like how she looked last year when she was out of sorts at the plate. Also wanted to see our big time freshman recruit Brittany Allen but she only got one plate appearance. She walked on six pitches, didn’t swing at any and almost got hit by two inside pitches. Looked very tentative. She’s a very athletic looking 5’10” that should develop into an outstanding hitter.

Great info ,hate hearing about the injury to Cheyenne.
Lugo will be crucial, great sign that she was dominant

I was at the game and met Amanda Beane’s dad Cary, super nice guy. He told me Cheyenne tore her ACL and is now recovering after surgery.

Johnny, Amanda looked like an old pro at 1b which you would expect from someone so dedicated to playing her absolute best. I'm trying to remember if she had to field a ground ball but not sure, maybe Sandman70 can remember. As I mentioned in some of the other posts, our 2B, SS and 3B are about as good a combination of defenders as I've seen in college softball. They made it pretty easy on Amanda as all three threw pretty much perfect throws to first all night long! By the way, I forgot to mention one play that stood out that Hannah Adams made at second. Early in the game, UNF topped a high grounder that one hopped all the way out to Hannah at second. The ball short hopped her, but as she came in she trapped the ball about six inches off the dirt and fired a strike over to first beating the runner by a couple feet. Everyone in the crowd pretty much at the same time just went WOW!!!!!!!. It was an incredible play she made look routine!

Lorenz is just such a ridiculously good and fundamentally sound hitter.

Much appreciated Legend as your info was very informative. Always look forward to Gator Softball, however I'm not sure what to expect this year. Pitching is a big concern that I have which is a big change from years past.

Sounds like Walton will be shaking up the infield this year.

She might be the best hitter to come thru Fla. She will hit 400 plus with power.

What are the odds of her going another full season at 2nd base without an error? She didn't have an error playing an entire season at 2nd base starting every game. Pretty incredible in college softball to do that. Hannah is unbelievable.
