The number 1 ranked Gator women and number 9 ranked men were at Arkansas and Nashville (oversized track) this weekend. The women are going to be tough to beat and had solid performances in several events. jasmine Moore was a solid 46-6 3/4 in the TJ and Natricia Hooper was second at 45-9 3/4, Moore was also the number 1 collegiate athlete in the LJ at 21-5 1/4. Talitha Diggs had a personal best at 22.75 in the 200 meters. Gabrielle Wilkerson ran her first 800 of the year and was respectable at 2:05+. The real highlight at the Tyson meet however was the men’s 4x400 performance at 3:02.09. It was a college and world leading performance. All four splits were 45+, not totally surprising (Miley and 800 meter guy (primarily) in high school has really improved in the 400. The other 3 runners were all in the open 400 final last year. This UF mens team is only ranked 9th, but Joe Fahnbulleh has yet to run this year. If it comes down to needing a win in the 4x4 it could get interesting for the collegiate record of just over 3 minutes flat, all except Miley seem extremely capable of sub 45 minute spilts. (and he is close) I’m not predicting breaking the magic 3 minute mark, but it bears watching. The other notable performance was freshman Sam Austin at the Music City event… he went 1:47.79 at 800 meters. Also (for Distance Gator) although she didn’t run this week, 1st year phenom Parker Valby went 8:53.89 in the 3k race at Kentucky two weeks ago. That mark was 3rd in the country at the time, but it would have won last years National event.
I know they are sending some athletes to Texas Tech to try to get more qualified. I don’t know, you’re way more connected than I am. I know the men are pretty much long shots for the title … even with Fahnbulleh, unless the jumpers improve drastically… and even then we have no throwers, no distance points, and only one relay team (on the mens side), we signed a multi-event transfer but he hasn’t competed.
they are letting the new coach bring in his own group, build from there. Joe got back to campus and his legs were dead, he would have won the 200 this year indoors. I dont know if he can get it together by the SEC meets. But I have not heard him putting much stress into workouts yet. The jumpers on the mens side are young and usually in Nics program it takes 2 to 3 years for full potential to be reached. They really like Clemons a lot. They think he is on the edge of hitting some big jumps. We are deep in the 400 for the indoors. But we are really pushing for a big outdoor season. I would not be surprised to see us outside the top 10 for the first time in forever on the mens side indoors.
seems to me mouse's formula was score big in the 400, 400 hurdles,4x400 relay, add in points from the long and triple jumps, and steal some points in the sprints.
It appears he will run at Texas Tech… also Cameron Miller will run, and Caleb Foster will run the hurdles (he has participated in the LJ but not the hurdles)
They have signed two throwers out of Georgia for both the men and women’s team, and also added a transfer from Iowa on the women’s side.
Sorry pjb, just saw this! 8.53 is smoking but I didn't see her at SEC indoors this weekend. I'm assuming she is hurt. Lauren Gregory of Arky won the event at 8.59 so 8.53 probably would have gotten us 10 points. If she is hurt, hope she gets better.
Biglgator may know more, but I’ve only seen 4… Adam Magoulas distance, Michael Stratton distance, Kevar Williams sprints, (all from Florida) and Logan Montgomery throws out of Georgia.
I have just seen Kevar, he has a lot of speed to gain when he gets on campus. Stride is very good, just very lean right now. I can honestly say I dont know about the rest.
and to be fair Steve just retired last year, the throws coach has done wonders for the women in the Hep events. They are throwing Personal Bests by feet over what they did before.
